Computers
« on: November 18, 2007, 07:17:56 AM »

Last weekend at CHL, a few folks commented on my 8 month old Dell M1210 XPS.  It's a pretty slick machine.
So, yesterday I finished up my chores and came in here to check out the site.  Computer no worky.  No video.  Called Dell, and actually got a person who speaks American.  He had me swap DIMMs and watch lights.  Either memory or the mainboard is toast.  He's dispatching a technician to make repairs.  So, now I have to compete with Stef for computer time.............and I keep getting all these IM pop-ups from her friends, so I just shut that crap off.

Hey AJ, you might want to reconsider your purchase.  The Panasonic CF-19 Toughbook is a SWEET machine.

That seams to be a real problem with Dell products lately-My own experience I bought a 4500 in 2002 and the mother board went out in uder 30 days (howver like you) they dispatched and replaced the board and I have been up and running since.

PS- I got my win 2000 machine up on a Oplex-Gx240 Platform I finally found the correct driver for the video and spent yesterday trying to get DR software to work on a CDROM only Drive, DUH!!!!!!!!!!!! But that happens when you scrounge the landfill for parts :)

I have a Dell 9100 laptop and I just changed out the hard drive using software and drive from these folks
http://www.apricorn.com/

I now have a (New 80 gig) Drive and now have the orginal 80 gig drive mirro of my laptop (or additional storage for my other junk stuff)
Thanks for your offer and suggestions.

No problem with my Toshiba Satellite A135 laptop with finger print scanner.  Has incredable color and definition on the wide screen, too.  I use it wireless (Verizon) where ever I go, now.  Best thing since sliced bread.

I have a Dell and a Gateway for work that have held up well in a construction environment.  But was recently told the Dell would be replaced with Tough book even though there is nothing wrong with either computer.  IT says it out of warranty and must be replaced, tax dollars had at work.

The Dell dude is coming to my house this afternoon to repair my laptop.  Knowing what I've learned over the past year at work, if I had it to do over, I'd buy a Panasonic CF-19 Toughbook.

Hacintosh used to be real common machines.  Here about them less anymore.  Last one I had a reason to do was a G4 box.

as i recall, hackintosh ran on top of another OS, much like vmware and linux/windows? i think it possible to now build a mac if components are chosen wisely. but dont wanna be the one to find out it doesnt work. not quiet that geeky! lol

There were some well done Hac's that ran a straight OS.  Haven't had a reason to go deep on the new ones.  So don't have a clue how open their architecture might have become.  Can't imagine it'd be too difficult though.

I seem to remember the release of OS X making this possible due to the operating system running on top of a unix platform. Unix will allow x-85 hardware. Google up "build a Mac"

I'm on a Toshiba Satellite T2300 @ 1.66 Ghz, .99Gb of RAM w/the finger thingy (that is a technological word) that I have borrowed while my Dell 8600 is being shipped back for cosmetic stuff. I like it so far. One problem I have seen is that some words on this site are no longer colored. 2ln's name is now blue instead of red. When I type and go back over it after editing something it writes over the letters. Small stuff. I'll check & see how it works outdoors this afternoon.
Thanks Henry for helping me spend more money.

Those dumbasses made three trips to my office and finally I had replaced everything.  Took over a week before I was up and running.  So much for 24 hour business service.

Bought a good 500GB backup now so I don't loose all my pics etc.
