I have the old POS too, what is it about us CVOers?   :nixweiss:  We must be the best thing these companies have ever found :huepfenlol2:

I do like the Treo though.

I love my Treo!
I have the 700P now & love it. I am told the the 755 is more stable & w/o the antenna. My only problem will be loading all the software bak on the shipping out the Dell.
I'll keep you posted on how I like it.

I've had the Toshiba Satellite (spelling??) for a couple of years without any problems. I like the HP line also. I've purchased many HP's over the years for my employer and not one has had a problem. I usually end up replacing them after 3 or 4 years to keep up with the times. I've worked on all kinds of laptops at one time or another and none are easy. I had one that kept turning itself off, but found that the two heat syncs under the laptop had clogged up and just needed to be cleaned out. If it happens, let me know and I'll tell ya a quick way to clean 'em. Works most of the time without taking apart.

Hey Ugly John, can you enlighten us?  Do you use one of those Enviro-Dusters?  :-\ har!  spyder

Enviro...what??  :confused5: Just kidding. Actually, I found a laptop pushed under my garage door with a note stating that it would just turn off all by itself when ever it decided to do so. I tried to see if it was a memory error etc.. but would turn off during the time I was trying to trouble shoot. Simply, the two fans under the laptop eventually picked up enough junk off of the table etc..that the heat syncs were clogged up, thus heating up the processing unit causing it to shut down when it overheated. A safety feature of most laptops. Ever notice your fans change speeds while working on them.... yep, the cpu knows when to put 'em in top gear to cool itself down. All in the bios.

Sometimes, you can take a can of air or using the air hose from the garage, (low pressure like 30lbs) and blow out the junk in the heat syncs. Do this with the laptop off/unplugged, place a large paperclip or simular object to keep the fan from turning while blowing out the heat sync. Reason is that you can burn up the fan with the air!!  Most of the compacted dust bunnies will dislodge and clear out. If all fails, time to take the unit apart and clean it out the hard way. Takes about an hour to do so, depending on the model. Most of the laptop internal diagrams can be found on the internet so that just about any one can do it. Not something you get in a big hurry on. And use a clean and big table to take everything apart...just makes things easier.

Anyway, never did find out the name of who pushed the laptop under the garage door. I just fixed it and left it there where I found it. Gone that night and found out a few days later that it was a friend of a friend etc.. and they were happy with the results etc... Anyway, hope this helps. Also, make sure you keep your virus dat files up to date, seems that I've been doing a lot of virus cleaning lately. Use the freebee virus scanning/protection software. They are very good and ......free!

Thank you for the tips on the heat sinks clogging up with dust.

My Dad is a retired IBM engineer and to my surprise knows nothing about computers! I bought him one from work, Dell Optiplex GX 280, the lease had run out and the employees had first dibbs. I set it up  and had him buy Symantec AntiVirus. His cable modem is with roadrunner and roadrunner offers this "free" internet security package through CA security. Of course it's only free for the first year, anyways, I said ok we'll load it and see what's what. I only loaded the spam blocker and antivirus apps. Well a couple of weeks ago he called and said his computer kept telling him he needed an antivirus program (a pop ups). he was getting these bogus pop ups on the desktop because he downloaded a bunch of crap! Now I don't know if he actually has a virus yet, but he has really messed up his machine. I was not a happy camper. Anyway, he now has all this spam loaded and possibly a virus that the CA Security suite is not picking up. It's all quit embedded in registry. I have found some sites that have some possible fixes for the thing. We will be loading the Symantec product once I get it half way running decent. I see know that him having a computer might not be the best thing  :o

He doesn't have "Security 7.1 Toolbar" at the top of his browser and keeps getting pop ups to load some virus protection? I know of two people that have recently had this happen to them and it wasn't picked up by Norton. :nervous: You can Google it to get more info about it.

Concerning viruses or getting rid of most or all of it, first find the McAfee stinger at their site and follow the instructions on the site. Site: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/. Then download Avast Home Edition virus protection Site:http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html. You will need to register, but it's free and works very well. Or your can use this product, AVG, which is equally good and free also. The link is here:http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0.

Both of these do virus data updates almost daily or as new viruses are discovered. These are the ones that us PC propeller heads use for home. Norton is a waste, has it's own problems and appears to miss a few, at least in my opinion. And McAfee is very good, but is always asking for a reboot and both of these cost ya monies, which I'd rather spend on chrome.

This should get ya back on the road of cleaning and keeping the PC/laptop safe. It's a start anyway. There is more, but is a bit more work. . .If you do not use virus protection and can just about guarantee ya that in about 5 minutes on the internet, you'll get hosed with viruses etc....  Once your all clean and running good, especially if it's a relative, get an image off the the PC/Laptop and keep it for future use. A good habit to get into. Also, keep your data in
one folder and back it up every week or more! Ok, I'm gone...I've talked enough. Hope this helps.

Yes, that's exactly what is going on.

Ugly John, I'll look into that AVAST software as well. I'm not totally convinced that he is infected with a virus yet, won't know until I get into it.

Yes I have all that and headaches come from my Dad's side of the family, my sister suffers from much more migraines than I do but I have my share of them. I thank Dad for the hypertension too!

Well I was on the Toshiba for about a week. My Dell finally came back today. What a difference it is. I thought I would like the smaller 12" screen but did not. I really missed having the larger 15". So now it's time for some memory upgrades & I'll keep the one I've got.
