Finally, my new '08 SERK Annie..........
« on: November 18, 2007, 10:05:12 PM »

This has been a great weekend...

I picked up my new '08 SERK Annie about noon Saturday.  Saturday was in the mid 60's and sunny and today was overcast and in the high 40's.  Combined yesterday and today we put just over 300 miles on it.  An hour of that riding today was in the rain, so it's no virgin from here on out.  Now I get to clean it all up for the first time.

It's like this, riding my old '76 FLH is like driving a Chevy Chevette and the new SERK is like driving a Cadillac, or better.  I've driven my friend's '03 SE Deuce quite a bit this summer and the IDS on the new SERK makes it feel like a fluid drive compared to his Deuce.

I was also afraid of the lowered suspension, but with 20 psi in the rear shocks and my wife and I loaded up, we took the same roads that had scrapped the heck out of the old FLH and now I take them faster with more lean and no dragging.  I'm sooooooooooooo happy with it I could just, well you guys know what I mean.

I've not yet run it up very high in the rev's, but this thing flat flys.  If 5th gear makes any noise, it's very little; I thought once I could hear something but not much.  I have the new V&H Dresser Duals and their Oval mufflers, but without the PCM III to tune it I'm going to wait a bit.  Right now the intake makes more noise than the exhaust does.  I can also from time to time here a bit of a tick as some had said, seems like it's probably lifter / rocker noise, but it comes and goes and is not bad enough for me to even worry about it.  I think these have roller tipped rocker arms, don't they?

I can see why a lot of you guys have said this is the best bike you've ever owned.

So here are the pictures before I get the THIS THREAD IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PICS! replies.

So there they are in all their glory.

I added the TourPak on Saturday night and the wife likes the back rest a lot better than the low one that came with the bike.  I also rode home 28 miles from the dealership with the smoked wind deflector and quickly took the old shield off my '76 FLH and snapped it onto the new bike and it works a lot better.

Thanks to all that have kept me pumped with showing their pictures, hope these dont' seem too redundant.

Later dudes and dudettes.

Very nice. It's good to hear a more experienced Harley rider review this bike. I felt the same as you but only had my first Harley to compare it to ('06 Fatboy).

I rode my Fatboy today on most of the same roads I rode the SERK on last weekend and I was having to be extra careful and slow not to grind the floorboards.

The '08 SERK has to be the best Harley has yet to produced. You have to ride one to comprehend the completeness of this ride.

Congratulations on the new SERK! My wife prefers to ride as a passenger with the Tour Pak on my RK too rather than just the sissy bar. Beautiful bike you have there, thanks for the pictures.

Congrads on your new SERK08, it looks awesome. I have the same bike but with the blue and diamond dust. The 110 is a screamer.  :)

Beautiful bike, congrats!! I too have found my SERK to be sooooo enjoyable that there have been a couple times I didn't want to stop riding. Was up here in the Adirondaks (up by the high peaks region) and felt like I could go forever, taking in the fall colors. My wife however takes exception with the seat and I will have to pick up a set of adjustable passenger boards to increase the WAF. Good luck and safe riding.

Howie

First, thanks to all the kind comments on the new bike.

Howie, for my build and how I sit on the bike, I find the stock SERK seat better than the Mustang 16" / 12" I have on the '76 FLH.  But, and there's always a but, the passenger part of the stock seat is less than she would like.  I hate to lose the Reptile print that now matches the TourPak as well, so it's going to be a hard sell for me to replace the stock seat.

I asked her about running boards for the rear and she said that she likes the look of pegs, at least on the RK versus the UC.  She has some trouble staying straight up with the lower foot pegs and tends to slide forward on the seat.  Every now and then she has to readjust herself a bit.

The brakes on this are soooo smooth and effortless, especially compared to my old FLH with just the old single piston single caliper brakes.

The only complaint I have right now is the clutch.  It grabs just off the bar and has taken a bit longer to get used to it.  If it's that touchy on the adjustment, that's probably why I've hear guys on here complaining about finding neutral when stopped.  I still don't have my service manual, due to ship late November I've been told.  Once I have that I'll probably do an adjustment inside the derby cover.

Has anyone actually gone to a parking lot and played with the ABS brakes yet?  I'll probably do that next spring, but for now I'll just wait until I need them.

I also installed the flush mounted gas cap and fuel guage.  I have an issue with the gas cap being flush with the trim ring.  I rotated the trim ring all around and it never did fit any better.  So right now the cap sticks up at about 4:00.  It still looks better than the stock cap and guage, but it should fit better than this.

Back to the bike.  I just love this thing.  When I'm on it I can't stop smiling from ear to ear.  Can you guys tell I'm pumped?????  The cruise works great.  The throttle seems to be pretty close to following the movement of the twist grip.  It may lag just a bit, but it's okay to get used to.

The paint work is just great.  The sun REALLY makes this thing stand out.

Okay, I'm rambling now.

Thanks again guys.

I had basically the same findings with the flush cap when I installed mine.  I had installed them on my 06 Heritage and those fit perfectly there.  On the SERK, there was no perfect position, so I found the closest position I could, then gently massaged the trim ring whild applying medium heat from the heat gun and got it pretty close and stuck it down.  It's close, but nowhere near what I would expect.  I do agree that it looks much better than the stock cap and gauge though!  I didn't test the ABS in a parking lot, but have had both the front and rear engage in real world settings (don't ask) and truly amazing.  After that experience, I have so much confidence in those brakes.  For the seat, wait for the Corbin 08 SERK styled seat which will be available later in 2008.  The stock SERK seat looks really good, but just doesn't offer any type of comfort for the BSR.  For the meantime, I put the Sundowner HD seat on which is pretty comfortable for both of us, just doesn't look too good but keeps the wife happy and on the bike.  Having the wife on the back makes the bike look better than the stock seat did anyway!
