Go Big Or Go Home
« on: November 21, 2007, 10:03:28 PM »

Funny how things from this site carry over into other areas of our lives. Like the title of this thread. Probably made you think I'd bought some Monster Motor for LD or something. Truth is, we're talkin TV's here. Linda and I will be celebrating 30 years of marriage pretty soon. I was startin to sweat bullets cause the two daughters and the wife were on my case for some big hoorah celebration and I just wasn't coming up with a plan they liked. I was startin to get worried, but figuring when the pressure really started kickin in, the lightbulb would come on. And, me being the crafty sort (some of you may recall one of the stickers on my helmet) I "suggested " to the wife that we needed to mark the event with something that would last longer than a weekend get-away. She actually concurred, (amazing how they agree when you least expect it ) So, I engaged the services of my loyal friend and best brother Beags and we did some research, going to places that sell Plasma Screen TV's (ok , so some of the research was done at Patrick's Irish Pub) Anyway, Linda got home an hour ago and off we went to " look" at a big screen TV. (like I'm any good at window shopping) To make a long story short,  I just bought a 58" HiDef Plasma Screen TV. (only 5" thick)  And now the onus for the actual 30th celebration falls to the wife as I've done my part. I made a deal with her, I'll buy the TV, you plan and pay for the Anniversary weekend. I'm off the hook and all it took was money, a bro's advice and well - - more money Damn don't you love it when a plan comes together.  ;D

Hey B B, I thought you said BIG?  Happy Anniversary on the Big 30 for sure.

I was going the same way as you but thought BIG was the way to go.  I may have sacrificed a bit of clarity but we sit so far back from the screen anyway I went BBBBIIIIIGGGGGGGGG! ! ! ! !

Check this out, 72" Samsung rear projection

58" was the largest PLASMA we could find. The difference between plasma and rear projection are like the difference between a Porsche and a VW Rog, I'll sacrifice a few inches of screen size for the incredible quality of plasma. Feels like you're gonna fall into the picture it's so real. Beags is gonna hook it up with a Bose home theater system for me and ROCK THE HOUSE !

I totally agree on the Plasma clarity but with the DLP of the Samsung and our distance from the TV along with HD satellite, the pic is so much better than what we currently have in a 10 year old rear projection I figured I could tough it out.  Besides after a few Crowns who knows the diff.

BTW good choice on the Bose, that's the way I went too, only used it two weekends but you are going to love it.

Have a great Turkey Day, gotta hit the road.  Rog

Happy 30th to you and the Mrs., Brian.  You gonna love the flat screen.  I've got four of them in the house from various sizes from 15" up to 60" Flat screen is the only way to go.  Enjoy your day together...

B B...first, let me give you a huge congratulations on the 30 year anniversary, and coming up with a good plan for a gift that each of you will enjoy for years to come!  30 years is no small feat in this day and time, but I don't have to tell you that.

TV technology is unreal these days...I use up my TV's...when they die, I get a new one.  Recently, my old fashioned picture tube Mitsibushi bit the dust after some 15 years, so I got a Sony Bravo and I have been amazed at the quality of the pic, particularly on the hi def channels...some programs, like the Discovery outdoor stuff, actually almost looks 3D, it's so good.  Mine's only a 42" (had to fit it in a particular hole size in the den, but it works for me, as I'm only about 10' from it.

Enjoy the new TV, and the next 30 years together!
