Billy, they'll sell you the insurance coverage right where you rent the bike.  They'll even offer you an additional coverage that will cover your deductable.

Motorcycles are considered recreational vehicles by American Express and most other credit card companies and are not covered.  But the insurance that they sell you when you rent the bike really isn't that much.

Answer is 'no' to best of my knowledge.  I've asked two different motorcycle insurance carriers and was told they will not cover rentals.

Motorcycles are considered recreational vehicles by American Express and most other credit card companies and are not covered.  But the insurance that they sell you when you rent the bike really isn't that much.

I went through this back in August and I couldn't find insurance to cover a bike rental.  At the time I had Hagerty Collector insurance they said no way.  I checked with my independant agent and he said no as well.

We were going to rent in Hawaii and Kona HD doesn't offer insurance coverage for their rentals.  So we had to post a $2,500 credit card bond so to speak.  They did say if anything happened that they would only charge cost on any repairs.

On the main land I know dealers that rent offer coverage for about $25/day etc.

Good luck with your rental.

Like the others have stated, they will offer you insurance with the rental.  I did a few rentals last year on trips, always took the insurance.  I believe that it mostly just covered the motorcycle, with a small limit for injury.

I have never rented a bike, but I would absolutely recommend buying the insurance when renting a bike.  You need to cover possible damage to the bike you are renting, but perhaps more important is your liability exposure.  You need to make sure that the insurance that you purchase will also pay for property damage and injury to someone or something that you might cause damage to and be liable for.  I would suggest that you make sure that the liability limits are at least the same as the limits you carry on your personal vehicle/bike (100/300/100 should be the minimum amount you consider).  You will also need to make sure that you have a verification of liability insurance to carry with you to show to a police officer if you get stopped.

Thanks for the help. I would never rent without the insurance. i just thought that since i insure my bike that it should cover there rental just like cars. But I was wrong. i have rented many times in the past. I just thought maybe some insurance co. may offer the coverage. Thanks Billy
