Looks like ya had a great trip.....my brother (real brother) and I went x-country back in '03.  Your dead on about the riding partners, don't know if there is anybody else I could do that trip with than him, atleast for someone on another bike, a passenger wouldn't be a problem, but other riders tend to have.......issues.  Only stop we made that he questioned me on was comin thru Arkansas I pulled off about 20 miles after we'd just stopped for gas.  Told him..."Well I just woke up and was doing 70mph on a motorcycle, so I figured I'd better stop for a few minutes."  :'( He understood... :D

And I thought I was the only one that had that experience on a bike. :shocked2: It is definitely a scary feeling to realize you've been sleeping on a bike. :nervous: When it happened to me I was starting to drift over into the other lane, and like you I caught up w/the group I was with and told them we had to stop.

Gary, I'd bet a good number of us have done that.  If only briefly.  Long days with the constant hum and thrum really can make you settle in to that rhythm.  I'd guess quite a few have felt that sudden start of alertness when they realize what they'd just done.

Have heard non-riders talk and not understand how you could ever go to sleep on a bike.  The wind, the noise, the everything else.  They think that short of total exhaustion it's just impossible.  They don't have a clue how relaxed and settled you can get several hours in to a nice long day.

Yeah that is one scarey feelin......my brother did say I was doing fine though, hadn't wandered from my lane position.  Of course I don't know how long I'd been asleep either.... :P

Otherwise interpreted as to relax and release your sphincter muscle(s) to allow the seat to be removed from between your cheeks so you can get off the bike. :huepfenlol2:

Great pics Headpan- cross country rides are fun!  Too bad about your bro.

Only fallen asleep once while riding (I-10 near Penasacola, FL a few years ago) but have been close to it a few times.  Usually best to get off the bike for a while when that happens.  Get the same reaction from non-riders as TLR - it's similar to falling asleep behind the wheel of a car.

PCH is an awesome ride, we stayed with friends in Reno then again in SF.  After a few days there we headed down the PCH to LA, I had work meetings in Thousand Oaks, CA for a few days then we took a Southern Route back across the US to Maryland.  We did 750 miles the first day out, 450 of em in the rain, second day we hit headwinds and crosswinds like you were talkin bout, scrapin the floorboards tryna go straight, nearly blown off the road in gusts, fought em all the way thru Illinois.  Iowa they were headwinds as we turned West and fuel mileage dropped like a brick, we only covered 400 miles that day and were flat wore the f&^% out.  I'll take rain over winds like that anyday.
