SERK 03 Cruise Control Problem
« on: November 29, 2007, 02:39:07 AM »

Hi, I'm pretty new to this board, I'll find it being beyond excellent, all around.

I have a problem with a cruise control on my SERK03.  I never used the thing, and probably never will, however, I've asked my mechanic to adjust my hand brake cable, I felt the brakes handle was a bit too loose, soonest he did that my cruise control stopped working (?!).  Could that be my problem, or should I be looking elsewhere, i.e. fuses ?

What did the mechanic actually do?  There is no adjustment to the brake cables.  They are hydraulic.

If the throttle or idle cables were adjusted that should not have bothered the cruise control cable.  If the cruise cable was in some way effected there is a lash adjustment for it.  Something you can do from the seat of the bike.

If you think that might be the problem trying the lash adjustment won't hurt anything.  The steps are:

Just looking through various threads. This is the reason this site is so good. Sharing of spot-on detailed info about problems and products. My cruise has been acting up ever since the return trip from Sturgis. Was told it might be a dirty speed sensor. Think I will try this be fore going to the dealer.

Hey soups, you're right on with that! I see you've been around here a long time. Musta changed a lot since the old days here. It's really great to see someone stick around this place for so long. A real testament to what Neal created here. Just thought I'd mention that. :2vrolijk_21:

Does the speedometer jump around a bit also?

The speedometer is spot on, no issues there, that I can see.  I'm actually able to turn the cruise control on, using left toggle switch (green light indicator on), but then it would not engage via right toggle switch (no indicator light).

Thanks again for all your input, I start checking those things out soonest I'm back home (currently in West-Africa).

There's quite a delay from when you first engage it, to when actually kicks in. I first thought mine didn't work because of that. Did you give it time to kick in? I'm not sure there's supposed to be that long of a delay. Is that adjustable somehow, anyone? Try giving it some time to kick in after you engage it, after you let off of the throttle. Your symptoms sound like mine, when I thought mine wasn't working either.

Jacek, the remark on the speedo wandering was for Soups post up above.  Don't want anyone chasing the wrong gremlins prematurely.  He'd written something about questioning the speedo sensor and that making the cruise erratic.  If the sensor were the culprit there it wouldn't be uncommon to see the speedo jerking around a bit also.

Hopefully yours will just be a cable issue since you're seeing responses suggesting the unit thinks that it is engaged.  Also don't forget the simple stuff.  Make sure the cable hasn't come unhooked at the throttle body for some reason.  If the cable is attached and the lash adjustment makes no difference you're likely looking at replacing a module.  Good luck.

Mine is an '03 and there is no delay on it...engages immediately.  Sounds like another one of those '07 defects to me.  I think you should tear the damn thing apart and rebuild it with aftermarket parts.  ;D

I think that 110" engine is causing all the problems! ::)

Good idea SCRM-R! I'll probably go that route! ;D ;)

Had the exact same issue with my 02 and same repair when the bike was about 4 years old.  The first sign of any problem was that when I would hit a bump the cruise would disengage....eventually got so that the cruise would not engage at all.
