Possible pitfalls of RHTD only upgrade to 110
« on: November 29, 2007, 10:15:38 AM »

What are the possible negative ramifications of adding RHTD's only to the 110 motor? Thanks!

No SERT/Thundermax/PCIII or changing to hi-flo AC?? :confused5: Don't think the sensors are going to be able to compensate for that change. Bike is running lean from factory just changing the pipes only might make it worse. :nixweiss:

not an expert here but i thought just changing pipes wasnt a big deal as long as no other changes are made. if you dont touch the intake you shouldnt be making it any leaner.

just thinking out loud here

I thought that was just for slip-ons (mufflers). :nixweiss:

It will surge and run like ca ca doo doo.  Run it long enough and it will burna valve.

Sert & fat a/f ratio is the way to go generally in mho, you can tune by the ass but a dyno helps.
My pal ass tuned his street glide then dynoed it...8 pulls for 1 1/2 horse.

There are some who will nit pick a antiquated, siamese rod, air cooled v twin to death over a couple onces of torque and a few horsepower, pictures, graphs, 8x10 color glossies n all.

Oe again, just anothe aholes opinoin.

I was thinking the RHTD's might make a lean bike even leaner as well, without a tune!?! What do I know??  :nixweiss: Looking for any and all opinions....Thanks

I wouldn't change exhaust or A/C until you're ready to have the engine retuned for these things. ;)

Plus, it'll also look like just about every other Touring HD out there! :o

Any possible engine damage?

Without retuning, very possible. I'd wait if I were you. There's an excellent PC tuner I go to near Albany, if you're waiting for that product to come out. Or from what I understand, Performance HD in Syracuse is pretty good with a SERT. But I have no first-hand knowledge of that. But I wouldn't change anything until you're prepared to have it retuned. Do it all together. That's my take on it. ;)

what's the phrase that's been tossed around here?  "Go Big or Go Home!"

I have slip ons for now.  Bike runs great. will tune and change AC in the spring...

I don't know if you can get the V&H muffs from the TD set up and change them for now.  Then, with $$ permitting change the headers, AC and tune.  Just a thought.  it helps avoid over $1,000 up front.

RH makes slip ons, but their not the same size as their TD's. The TD's use a stepped header and larger mufflers. Stock slip-ons are 1-3/4" dia inlet. You can't use their stock size slip-ons on their TD's. And you can't use their performance TD mufflers on stock headpipes.

Being the near rocket scientist I am, I would happen to guess a high flow exhaust will decrease exhaust scavenging resulting in higer combustion chamber temperature via lower v.e. .  due to an artifically lower a/f ration,  Just a guess, do what makes you happy.

Howie, what risk mechanically would there be?

And the non-rocket scientist explanation is, if your engine runs too lean as a result, you could overheat badly, burn a valve, or worst case, blow the motor. And they wouldn't cover that damage under W.....ty.
