End result. I do plan on hard bags as soon as I locate a painter but in the meantime maybe these will help the edges and anything to cover up the zinc plated bolts look better to me anyway.

novazeus, thanks for the suggestion.

When I get back to St. Louis from my annual trek to Michigan over the holidays, I'm going to try to get a stop located on the outside of the back of the lower bag.  Made right, I think this can stop the lid from over rotating and hitting anything on the shock.  This could also stop the lid from hitting the backrest and leaving an impression on the leather lid.

Thanks again for the input.

Happy Holidays to all.

With two sided tape on the inside because the vinyl cap could be tighter to suit me.

Clever.

If you're in Tampa, I'd suggest http://www.customflamepainting.com/ in St. Pete. I've seen some of their work and they do a nice job for good money.

Thanks for the paint recommendation and with all experiments there might be changes before the final product. I had to trim the depth of the cap to make it fit better and another benefit of cutting the end off these caps is the edge appears to be thinner perhaps to make it easier to slip on a tube so when you cut it, it actually is thicker and less pliable, which is what I'm looking for.
I don't think I can take credit for this idea because another forum poster on another forum suggested vinyl caps and I am presuming this is what he used.
Here is the final design.

that looks very clean and nice. When my bike arrives I will have to do the same thing. They look like they belong and thats what I want.
