O8 mufflers
« on: December 11, 2007, 07:18:59 PM »

I have a question about the stock mufflers on my 08 Duracell. I like the sound of (or no sound) but I want more air to flow thru. On my 07 ultra I change to screaming eagle slip ons and they work perfect (more air and almost as quiet).  So I tried the same on this but the slip ons I bought are real loud, so my question Has anyone drilled holes thru the stock mufflers just to let more air flow thru?  I don't care if I ruin the muffler. I was going to change the baffles in the slip ons but their welded in.  Any input will help.  Thanks

Don't think I've ever heard of anyone that did that to stock mufflers and was happy afterwards. Supertrapps with either internal or external discs will be quiet and tuneable.

bdas2,

You didn't mention which slip-ons you bought for the '08, but the latest H-D slip-ons shouldn't be much louder than stock.  H-D no longer sells or encourages the use of the loud pipes they sold only a few years ago (methinks they are trying to make nice with the EPA now that they are paying more attention to motorcycles).  Various aftermarket vendors also offer quieter versions of their high flow mufflers, also due to the pressure from the EPA as well as various noise regulations being enacted around the country.  Odds are you will get much better results with a properly engineered replacement muffler, versus just drilling holes in the baffle end plates of the stockers.

This link is to the new street legal version of the SE mufflers.  They look similar to the old SE one piece mufflers that I have, but are supposed to be quieter (street legal, which the old mufflers aren't).   http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448769844&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302319761&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302319761&bmUID=1197491858485&bmLocale=en_US

I see a couple of you guys have recommended the SuperTrapps.  I've been thinking about the disc series slipons for my '06 CUSE.  Currently running V&H True Duals and Ovals.  Would like something quieter than the Ovals.  Also considering the Bassani slipons with the 2" baffles.  Not the Megaphones.

Any input or suggestions?

The Bassanni's will be a little bit quieter than the Ovals, but not by much. The best feature about the S-T's is you can make them as quiet, or as loud as you want. Go with a small amount of discs and a closed end cap and they are quiet. Add discs, the sound goes up. Or, if you want to run with the big dogs for a day, put on the open end cap and make some noise.

Greg, have you heard of a shop in Dallas called " The dyno difference " ? The guy talks a pretty good game over on HTT. He learned from a really good source, a guy called Ugly Dougly, who did all the tuning for and with Mike Roland on the Kuryakyn stuff. I've got the ph # at work.

Who makes the Elite D Exhaust?

The Elite D pipes are made by Yuill Bros. (Freedom Cycles). See this thread:

I have drilled out about ten diferent sets of pipes on my own and on customer bikes, and have had real problems.  In fact one of my techs at my shop just bought an 08 street bob and he popped the baffle plug completely out. The sound is increased and the power never suffered and cost nothing.

How loud is the new Freedom exhaust system compared to a Supertrapp 2-1?

If you go with another slip on you can sell the stock mufflers on eBay to fund your new purchase.  You may just about break even.  That's better than drilling holes IMO....
