Storing a stock exhaust system?
« on: December 16, 2007, 08:51:41 PM »

Guys

Need some ideas on this one?

A most gracious site member has located me a set of Shark Fin exhaust tips for my SERG.

Since I have the 2 into 1 on the bike and I'm not changing it I was wondering the best way to store a stock exhaust system.

I'm thinking that hanging the system from the garage ceiling would be the best but as we all know, on this site everything been done at least once and sometimes more.

So give me some suggestions as to how you would store a stock exhaust system.

You really don't want an answer from this crowd do you?? :confused5: Oh, you are talking about exhaust. My bad. ;) ;D

Back on topic...

Chip,
I have mine stored out of the way in the basement. I would think as long as they are kept dry and protected from getting scratched there would be no problems. What are you concerned about?

Scott

It's one of those "If you have to ask you wouldn't understand" request.

As time passes the SERG's become more and more rare and to have all the stock pieces and parts make the value of the bike that much more.

That's why I want to store the exhaust system.

To much snow shovelling HUH?

No concerns dOOD!

Just thought hanging the entire system all assembled would be a good way to protect and store them.

Besides, you of all people know how important it is to protect your chrome.

I would think they would be fine hanging them in the garage. I would protect edges that are laying against something. As long as they stay dry and not moved around a lot you should be alright. Clean them up, put a good coat of chrome polish on them and forget about them until you need them. :2vrolijk_21:

Chip, in NC, it probably doesn't matter what you do to 'em, they'll survive.  But, to be safe, spray the pipes down with WD-40, wipe down and store either in your garage, or for the best protection, inside.  Either way, those pipes are pretty tough, so should last quite some time no matter what you decide to do with 'em.

Thanks!
Will go ahead and hang them in the garage.
The bike garage is well insulated and heated and cooled so it never gets colder than 65 degrees.
(well except for when I open the garage door)
I was just thinking I would ask so I wouldn't have one of those "aw chit" moments when I see how someone else stored their pipes.

Thanks

Chip, funny you asked this about storing the stock pipes, I'm trying to decide how to store the extra painted SEEG tins that I've started accumulating.  That's even harder than the more durable chrome pipes I think.  At least you can 'hang' the pipes and only worry about accumulating dust/dirt in the heated garage.  ;) har!  spyder

Chit Spyder!
I been buying original stock parts for a blue 01 SERG and am keeping them in the shipping boxes.
Store yours in a heated area and don't let anyone open the boxes.
Some day soon they will be worth a lot of buckeroos!
Smart man I say!

One friend of mine couldn't figure out what the heck to do with his stock pipes and decided to use them as floor candle holders.

To each their own I guess!  His wife loves them BTW.

Is there a pharmaceutical packaging company near by?  They have class 100 clean rooms where you can have the parts sterilized, wrapped in lint free cloth and shrink wrapped in a low humidity environment.  Storage should be in an area with no UV light and a consistent temperature......

Mine was waxed good, wrapped in carpeting, duct taped and placed on the top shelf in my basement where no one can reach it or knock it down and I also have a dehumidifier to eliminate risk of condensation that you might get in a garage since metal parts can change temperature much quicker than other items in your garage and therefore provide a good surface for moisture to condense on.
