Motor Mount that reduces vibration>>>
« on: December 18, 2007, 12:32:08 AM »

Just found this post on another site and was curious if anyone has tried one. If not I''ll be the first and take one for the team..Greg

Most that own a '06 touring model are aware of the service bulletin regarding the motor mount issue. When changing to the new version (which is manufactured with stiffer rubber) some have noticed an increase in vibration. I have personally had this experience with my SG. I even tried to purchase the old model after mine was changed out but couldn't find a dealer that had one in their inventory. I figured I would just learn to live with the new version that is until today!
Let me explain. In a recent post the topic of vibration came up. There was a particular response from a fairly new member (RISGDUDE) that got my attention. He said that he was unhappy with the newer motor mount and his dealer suggested he replace it with a Buell motor mount that was softer but stronger than the stock mount that came with the '06's. He tried it and reported good results so I asked him for the part #, ordered one and had it installed today. All I can say is, "WOW!!!" dramatic difference on my SG. I'd estimate a good 35% to 40% (at least) reduction in vibration. Especially at idle.
For those interested the part # is L0501.2

Below is part of the service bulletin that came out in '06 suggesting the change. It shows the old and new style.

Did they change it again for the '07s?  My SERK shakes horribly at idle, makes my Fatboy seem like a 'Wing.  Dealer says the mounts are okay, "we've seen some of em that just are that way".

The difference is that the Fat Boy is a Softail and on Softails, the motor is not mounted in rubber engine mounts, it is bolted straight to the frame and has counter balancers in the motor to reduce the vibration.

Your SERK motor sits on the rubber motor mounts and bounces around at idle, but is smoother at speed.

Yeah, still doesn't explain why this one about bounces the tire off the ground and most are fairly smooth at idle.  Question remains - are the '06 and '07 mounts the same or did they change them?

Greg I also read about the Buell motor mount on another forum.  It would be nice if it worked and I don't believe it was very expensive.

On a side note, the Velva Ride front mount really works well on my bike.  My old mount was not broke, just wanted to try something better a couple years ago and the Velva is.  2Lane also has the Velva mount and their stabilizers and I believe he will tell you he likes his also.

If you try the Buell, please let us know how it works.

I use the Velva Stabilizers, but their mount is Urethane and a little stiff. I have that one on my Pro Street. I use the True-Track front mount on my SERK. Seems OK to me. ;)

www.alloyart.com

they have a new front motor mount that looks like their rear one

0933-0045 chrome
0933-0046 black

it looks like the alloy art one bolts to the cross brace that the crash bar attaches to. Little flimsy for my taste.

Brian-
The Alloyart is one crazy looking mount.  Seems like overkill.  Sometimes you can't invent a better mousetrap (mount). Thanks for pointing it out.   Bob

Not really sure how that alloyart mount works.  :nixweiss: Plus that is one butt-ugly looking piece hanging down from the down-tubes cross member.  Seems a little gimicky to me...and beings that you still leave the front engine mount, how can you prove this thing really works? ???

Seems like it just makes the motor more ridgid. Must fine tune alignment. :nixweiss:

You'd think with a $400 price tag, they'd try to find someone who could spell to do the web page description!  :nixweiss:

In that one short page they've managed:

"Frnt" instead of front
"handlebard" instead of handlebars
"preforance" instead of performance
"Stabilize's" instead of Stabilizes
"triandulating" instead of triangulating
"Elimnates" instead of eliminates

If they take the same level of care with their product, no thanks!  :o
