Discouraged
« on: March 27, 2005, 04:58:54 PM »

Most have seen my posts concerning my oil problems and the damage done by the cam chain tensioner shoe. I got my SERK back from the shop yesterday with new cams, oil pump, lifters and associated bearings (all damaged by the shoe). While everything was apart, the dealer also replaced the breathers on top of the rocker boxes. I took a short 100-mile ride today and came back. The SERK seemed to run great with less valve train noise than there was before. Just to make sure I pulled the air cleaner off when I got back. There was more oil than ever in the air cleaner. About 10 ml came out when I opened it up. What else is there to replace? Looks like I will be back in the shop tomorrow and on the phone with HD.

S&S makes a reed valve breather replacement of the HD system that is reported to dramatically help the oil blow back issue.  I don't have any particular experience with the S&S breather, but I have read good things.

A buddy of mine is putting one in his new Roadglide so I'll let you know.  He has a notorious oil blow-by kind of riding style.  He and I dragged off on the freeway last summer and at the exit ramp, he found out he was next to me at 110 mph and was only in 4th gear.  That's always good for a few drips out the air cleaner!!!! i had the reed valve installed out the box.
never any blow by at all.
my bike did not come stock with the cvo motor, so i am not really sure how much or how involved it is to install.
are you sure it's motor oil on the air cleaner? they might have put to much oil on the filter itself. does the oil have a redish color to it?

The S&S Breather Reed Valve fits behind the cams on the crank.  Here is the S&S website page:

Index to page 42 and 43 of their catalog.  Everything you ever wanted to know about oil blow back.

When the cam compartment was rebuilt I had them add the S&S reed valve. I am no longer covering the right saddlebag with oil. Now, it just drips onto the cam cover.

I wish to go to a gear drive cam for my SERK and do not want to do head work, change valve springs or scarifice dependibility.  In fact all I want it dependibility as I am happy with the way she performs now.  (factory 103 with no headwork and stock compression,  with reinhearts, PCIII, and High flow Air Cleaner.  So here is the question.  Which S&S cam will work with the factory springs?  My dealer says 585's (I think the lift might be a bit out of range for the factory springs) but I have seen some postings here about putting in a 570G.  For those who have the 570 how has it worked for you in an otherwise stock 103 SERK?

Many thanks in advance!
