Extended warrenty due to oil leaks?

Let me get this straight in my mind.  Folks are willing to pay $1600-$2000 for an ESP just because of the oil leak problem?  Now that is one high priced oil leak.  You do realize that once you have this leak during the original warranty, and it seems that most eventually will, H-D is obligated to keep "fixing" it until they provide a real, honest-to-god fix?  The fact that Willy G. isn't aware of the issue doesn't mean the rest of the civilized world isn't aware of it.  I can't imagine any way that the MoCo could legally weasel out of paying for a repeat "fix" beyond the 2 years, without the customer anteing up a nickel.  Even if the first failure didn't occur until after the 2 years, due to low mileage for instance, I can't see them being able to blow anyone off while there is so much evidence of a widespread problem available.

If my only reason for considering the ESP was the oil leak, I would put that cash back in my pocket.  Now, if you're considering it because of all the other high priced problems like flexible crankshafts, I suggest you go with what makes you most comfortable.  I've never considered an ESP to be worth the expense in the past, but the latest and greatest (?) from H-D has made me reconsider that position.

Well in my case head gasket was part of why I bought the Extended Service Plan. I mostly bought it because I plan on keeping this Jester for a while and if a crank, wheel or any of the electronics go back it will be a good way to save a few $$$$$$$$$. In ohio I asked my dealer about his lowest price ,and I mentioned the deals I have seen on this site and mine ended up $1800.00 .He did the 1700 and tax moved it up to $1800,that just shows sometimes the dealer usually will match prices to keep our $$$ in thier pockets. That's a good price but how can they charge tax on an ESP?  It's not a tangible item like parts or accessories.  Do they charge tax on labor in your state as well?

I'll apply the $1,800 cost of the warranty to a new engine or a Howie bulletproof build. If I can manage to get the dealer to cough up a little warranty money towards the cost of the build.....

Here's a mental scan of the spreadsheet.

Estimated Cost of build:                                     $7,500
Savings of extended warranty                              -$1,800
Savings of canceling York                                   -$1,500
Dealer kicks in                                                  -$2,500
I kick in $1,000 cash JD doesn't know about         -$1000
Budget total                                                      $700

It's not that I'm a sick ______ and want to rebuild this engine, it's just that it makes financial sense. How embaressing for a princess like JD to be stranded on the side of the road with a crappy engine.

Ken,

You are an admirable man!  Always thinking of JD's personal health and safety.  I think you due for some kind of award.

Shhhhh...JD might hear.

It is pretty cool to have spares. One's in the shop, my next door neighbor's is in the shop.so we took the V-Rods for a cigarette run yesterday. We knew of a place that seels smokes 35 miles away. They're not any cheaper, but we really felt the need to ride to that spot to buy. It was a blast. It was his first time to ride a V-Rod. He was grinning ear ta ear. It's hard to NOT twist the throttle. He's like me, Don't wanna give up the air cooled bikes, BUT, these sure are fun to ride sometimes. Just a totally different ride.

So, being the good neighbor you offered your toys, but were concerned about his riding skills and you rode the new bike and let the neighbor ride the old used bike  :nixweiss:

The old used bike is newer than the new used bike. The new old bike is older than the old new bike. He didn't ride the new used bike. I rode the used bike though. Ya know?

I've tried to have that same conversation lately.  It gave me a skull cramp.

I have the extended coverage and it goes in the shop for the 4th time tomorrow for oil leaks. They keep replacing gaskets and will not consider oil is leaking from the cylinder becuase the shop has never heard of a single case of this happening on a 110. Wish MOCO would come out with a solution soon. It's really beginning to frustrate me. Still, I love the bike in spite of the leaks. That being said, I would not buy another CVO until I was sure this problem had been addressed.
