Lakota Sioux Secede From US, Declare Independence
« on: December 21, 2007, 02:59:03 PM »

http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/12/21/5946/

Quote
Political activist Russell Means, a founder of the American Indian Movement, says he and other members of Lakota tribes have renounced treaties and are withdrawing from the United States.

“We are now a free country and independent of the United States of America,” Means said in a telephone interview. “This is all completely legal.”

.......

Means also said his group would file liens on property in parts of South Dakota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming that were illegally homesteaded.

.......

Means said anyone could live in the Lakota Nation, tax free, as long as they renounced their U.S. citizenship. The nation would issue drivers licenses and passports, but each community would be independent. “It will be the epitome of individual liberty, with community control,” Means said.

.......

Lakota tribes have long claimed that the U.S. government stole land guaranteed by treaties — especially in western South Dakota. “The Missouri River is ours, and so are the Black Hills,” Means said.

Very interesting.

Since I live in the Black Hills, and don't want to give my home back to the Indians, maybe I'll smoke a peace pipe with Russell, join their new nation, and quit paying taxes :drink:

I just hope I will be able to use the public road system!  Otherwise I might have to trade my hog (I mean my sickle) in for a dirt bike.   :huepfenlol2:

Well, seceding from the US is a bit out there, but the Native Americans have been given the shaft as long as the Europeans and Spanish have been here. They were move from place to place, usually to land on little or no value to the US government. Not sure how many of you have ever been on a reservation, I spent time on several of them and most are bleak places, out in the middle of no where, no real job opportunities, so now they build casinos to bring in money.

We actually rode through the Pineridge Reservation in South Dakota on our way to Sturgis in 2004. It's not a happy looking place. There is some beautiful land there, right next to the Bad Lands, but the community is very depressing. Really makes you think about the way they live and are treated.

The Lakota Sioux own the land around Crazy Horse outside of Sturgis. While I can't speak to job opportunities there, it is a place of incredble beauty. Anyway, I'm not saying the white man didn't totally screw the red man in every dealing they hand together. All I'm saying is that it is the way of mankind on earth to take what he can when he can if he has the means, the will and the power. We cannot re-write history. Almost everyone, everywhere was conquered by someone at some point in time. The Roman Empire was the greatest show on earth for centuries. Italy is hardly a world power today. The Ottoman Empire once ruled all of the middle east and parts of Asia and into Europe. Now it is a bunch of independant contries bent on killing each other over their own interpretation of religious documents. Once upon a time theThe sun never set on the British Empire one can hardly call the British a superpower anymore. The USSR once stretched over three continents. And so on and so on. In my opinion, the USA has seen it's peak during the Reagan Administration and we are now in a slow descent to being a lesser nation than China. Time Magazine has Vladamir Putin as it's man of the year because he is rebuilding the former Soviet Union. There's a thousand ways to debate this issue. My point is this. Russell Means is right but being right doesn't re-write history.

Hey BigB......now you've gone and stated the realistic side of all this and I'm getting depressed.  :( Does it get better soon? :confused5:  har!   :drink:spyder

Actually, Crazy Horse is just outside of Custer.  Maybe you're referring to Bear Butte.

Nice try Russell Means!  Sorry it doesn't look like it's gonna happen!   :mango:

This happened outside the Pine Ridge Res during Sturgis 2007:

One day we went to this bar located in Scenic, SD that only opens during Sturgis week.  It’s located about 60 miles South-West of Rapid City at the edge of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.  We needed gas when we pulled up (about 10:30 am) but there was a pick-up truck with 6 Native Americans using the only pump.  The driver offered me a pull on the fifth of Old Grand Dad he was drinking and like a fool I took a swig.  One of the women wanted me to give her a pencil and paper.  I told her I didn’t have one so she blurted out her phone number and told me to call her. My friends were bent over laughing.  The truck load of drunk Indians (it’s not a stereotype if it really happened, is it?) left the gas station without paying for the $10 worth of gas they pumped.  We told the old man at the cash register that the pump didn’t work and he said we had to pay for the $10 worth of gas before we could pump any more.  So we told him it was those Indians that ripped him off, not us.  Finally, he let us fill up, ‘cause he said he knew who they were and he’d get his money later.  The gas was 85 freakin’ octane.  We then went into the Long Branch Bar across the street and behind the bar was this female wearing a bowie knife, tats all over her arms and who knows where else, and her hair was ratted straight up about 8 inches, then it took a turn straight back then it turned straight down to her lower back.  She kind of reminded me of Elvira, but not nearly as hot.  He name was Dancer and, as far as I could tell, all she did was stand around and let bikers stare at her.  She never did get anyone any drinks.  Her nails were too long to open a pop top.  Good times!

Fuc*in' a right panhead_Jimmy! That's the kind of stories I'm talkin' about. The only drawback is that you didn't have a pic of 'Dancer' to share with us. I couldn't give two Fuc*s about the post. I love these stories. Thanx! I was totally feeling you and can't wait to get to Sturgis myself!

I know for sure that a lot of people have had to do jail time by trying the secede from the United States theory with the IRS.  I have read about it a lot in the news.
