Tired of getting whipped!
« on: December 21, 2007, 10:16:48 PM »

Does anyone have a suggested replacement for those gawd awful outrageously long whips the MoCo calls antennas?

I do like to listen to my favorite FM station and use my CB on occasion, so the replacements must have a good range to work properly.

Of course my dealer suggests to keep the stock ones on for best performance. On my '05 SEEG I replaced the stock antenna with a shorty and it works great except I seem to lose the signal approximately 10 miles sooner than my buddies with their stock whips.

So, what would you suggest as a good replacement on my Duracell that would do the trick for the FM and CB to maintain good reception and to allow me to exit and enter my garage or trailer without the need to inform everyone within 5' to watch out?

Thanks in advance everyone.

J&M's shorties are probably your best bet, especially for the CB..

Grizzly, here's a pic of the antennas, not a great one, but you'll get the idea.  They are available in 12" and 18".  I just purchased a pair of the 12" on ebay for $64.90 including shipping.  They retail for $39.95 each.  I think some of the members here may have had problems with the vendor in the past but I took the chance, the ratings are good.  The vendor had multiple sets and I bought them last Sunday and they were at the house on Thursday.  You can also buy them here: http://www.sierra-mc.com/

Freedom cycle also makes a nice set of short antennas.

I just bought a set of the J&M's off ebay for $39.95 each and only $5.00 shipping.  americanclassicmotors is the seller, they have them listed as buy now, so don't have to go through the bid cycle.  Seemed to be the lowest price and the shipping was more then fair, they also have a very high positive feedback.  Now I just need the bike!

Thanks everyone for all your input.
I'll be placing an order with J&M for a set on Monday.
They look great and from what most of you say, they work better than the stock antennas!

Have a wonderful Christmas.

The only thing about doing that is it is possible to burn up the CB if you use it much at all, as it is not tuned properly with the CB cut off short like that.  Plus, I'd probably poke my eye out eventually while walking behind the bike to get something out of the TP.  The J&M's are pretuned for the HK system.

I had the Freedoms on mine but did not care for their tendency to look like a limp p@#ker when the weather got hot...

r the cb and radio ant. the same

They are the same...but, on the J&M's they are tuned from the factory for the HK CB system, and the same ant. will operate the FM side just fine...it's not that critical.  I listen to XM 90% of the time anyway, so the FM ant. is just for decoration.

For the CB, the length of the antenna has everything to do with how the CB head unit performs.  I'm not an expert on this subject, but it effects the SWR, and if that is outside of certain parameters it is possible to burn up the CB unit on the radio.  With the J&M's you don't have to worry about it...some of the CB wizards here on the site say they are better than the stock whips in that regard.
