Here is a thread with a lot of information on what you may be looking for - Spun Aluminum Oil Temp Gaugue. Unfortunately it's 21 pages long and some of the pictures/text may be missing from forum software upgrade.

If you did, what part no. did you buy (spun aluminum to match the other gauges) and more importanly, did you need that extra kit (around $50-60) to do it?

How did the installation go?

DD, the thread Dood cited is a long one.  Lots of give and take.  The executive summary would be:

1) Spun Aluminum gauge from Harley is a close but not an exact visual match.  Subtle differences even I stopped worrying about.

2) If you install it for god's sake do not install it as the Harley instructions tell you to.

3) Install as follows:
a) Remove plug from oil pan next to oil drain plug regularly used to change oil.
b) Get a brass bushing to reduce from that hole down to the sending unit and screw the sending unit in there.
c) There is a two wire harness that plugs in to the sensor, sensor feed and ground.  Route it back to the new gauge making the ground connection in route.
d) At the guage use the existing power and light connections and simply leave the air temp sensor plug disconnected.

finished mine last week, used HD#7530-05, did not buy HD adapter kit and instaled into oil pan. Used wiring for outside air gauge, I had to cut factory connector off and crimp on 2 new wire connectors, used factory lighting. I had to hook up wiring before I installed unit, not enough room for my hands otherwise.

You used one more fitting than I did on the ones I've installed.  Just used the reducer in to the pan and the sender in to the reducer.  Turned the corner that you turned with the elbow with the harness itself and then used a plastic wire clamp on the corner pan bolt.  Was there room to turn the elbow full rounds to tighten it or did you have to lower the pan for this install?

I looked for a 3/8 by 1/8 90 degree fitting but could not find one. By putting the elbow fitting into the pan first I did not have to lower pan to install. Actually it worked out better for me this way, giving the probe enough room to tighten down with bottoming out and hitting the elbow.

As 2Lane stated, you're the only one that used a 90 degree fitting.  Like Don, I didn't even think you could turn a 90 without hitting the pan.  What was the reasoning behind the 90 and not just going straight in with a reducer?  Were you afraid of road debris hitting the sensor if it was straight out?

Not faulting you for the way you did it.  Everyone comes up with something a little different.  Thanks for the pic's..

It just looked like the best position, the wires have to go to the side and up the frame so I positioned with as little of wire as possible exposed underneath.

I was just too damn dumb to ever think of using the extra fitting.....

Oil pan will be off my bike before long.  Bet I look the wire routing over carefully before reassembly to see if you've discovered a better mouse trap.

I did mine just like this except I put the wiring in "heat shrink" tubing for an added layer of protection...

Here also.  Double wrapped actually where it was exposed beneath.  Single wrap once it had turned uphill.

I honestly hadn't thought about the 90..  The only thing I don't like is the 1 extra fitting and that the sensor is not going in as deep to the oil (if that makes sense).

Question: Jim, for you to change your oil, you need to first pull the sensor and then remove the elbow?

DD, someone had asked this previously when installing these gauges first came up and many went to our own alternative (non-Harley-instructed) installation methods.  The normal oil drain plug is not the one being used.  It's the "other" plug in the oil pan over in the center.

Notice in Jim's picture here the other plug at picture-left to the brass fittings.  That's the drain plug.
