DDog-

Don't run off and pout.  We appeciate your oppinions as we do all of our members.  I read your post this afternoon in saying that "it was sad" that you read all the pages of the "other" oil gauge posts that d00d had sent you to for information and most of it was "off topic".  I let your remark slide and didn't respond as I didn't think it was appropriate for someone as good as dOOd in trying to help you out.

That's just the way forums seem to go-4-5 posts on topic and then 10 posts off.  That's what makes it fun and interesting (at least for me).  Don't be a stranger, log back in and you'll help us learn something someday.

I did the gauge replacement and after a few days the slight difference in appearance is hardly noticeable.
(irritating, but I got over it.)
Oil temp is more important to me than ambient air temp. I'm outside on a motorcycle for pete's sake! I can feel if its warm or cool....

ps - I ran the temp sensor to the oil pan per referrals from this sites members.

BB, your experience mirrors mine.  The original McEwan instrument was significantly different.  Three different Harley variations all released at about the same time under the same part number all had their own subtle differences.  The one that finally become common is a match to the tach and speedo.  So it's obvious that someone just worked from the wrong instrument as a template when designing the face for the oil temp gauge.

The minor difference in that final gauge does very quickly get lost on you though.  It is much more helpful informative to have actual engine feedback.  It's also a lot more functional then the rain gauge to tell us what the weather that we are sitting in might feel like.

2lane-
ya, the temp gauge doesn't make much sense here in southern Louisiana, its either hot or hotter.
This summer, heat indices (indexes?) at times were 125+

My main appearance diff is the black ring on the inside outer edge, under the glass face,(:-X) to shade the gauge lighting. (mine has small slots, stock is a solid ring)
and the black needle 'stop' posts.

Ever since you got that Road Glide you've had a really big set man!  Guess a guy doesn't need that Enzyte stuff from the swimming pool commercial when he's got a big mean 95" SERG down there!

That SERG sure has changed my life!
For the better!

In temp ranges like that I'd definitely be far more interested in how hot the engine oil was then whether I was sweating or SWEATING.

well actually - its more like melting.... :bigcry:
I imagine similar to riding in to a wind tunnel blast furnace.  :D

My oil temp yesterday was still around 230 w/ ambient air at 68 in town, avg 34mph. (humidity, 93%)
