While fixing oil leak what mods would you do?
« on: December 23, 2007, 10:04:52 PM »

OK, I guess the only thing to do is to get the cylinder replaced since its dripping oil and hope for the best. While they have the engine opened up what modifications would you guys recommend? I have heard a lot of guys say the cams are very weak. Would most of you recommend replacing them while there working on the bike? If so what cams should I go with? Is there anything else that I should take advantage of having done while the motors opened up. Although I do like the power of this bike and wouldn't object to a little more power if its achievable with a fairly simple modification, I don't need a lot of speed. My wife rides with me most of the time and I'm not looking to set any land speed records. I would love to get the fins diamond cut. I love the look. But there just to much chance that the #@%# new cylinders would have to be replaced again after paying all that money to have the diamond cutting done. So can you guys give me a little advise hear?

At 8000 miles, I would urge the dealer to check the crank runout.  I've made this suggestion many times.  Offer to pay the additional labor if necessary.  If you are doing cams, it won't be any extra work. If the runout is excessive, you get a new motor.  That's what I did at 5000 miles.  It's worth the money to know that it won't grenade on you.
Just my .02.

I'm not that educated when it comes to mechaniques. I know what the crank is. Can you explain what crank runout is and what is involved in checking it? Thanks in advance for the education.

won't try to explain crank runout as I'm not very eloquent at technical writing...but the results of crank runout are that the motor vibrates a lot more than it should and the oil pump can fail...it can be checked by disassembling the cam chest...I agree with skreminegul07 that it's a good idea to have the runout checked while they're replacing cylinders...I have an '08 se dyna and I changed heads, cams, exhaust, etc at 200 miles...it runs great and I feel that it's less likely to develop a leak because it runs a lot cooler...but it cost $3k and I no longer have the se110 script on my heads...in my opinion these motors need different cams, exhaust, and a power commander or race tuner in order to run right...the thing about changing cams is that the stock cams make unbeatable power below about 2700 rpms...a cam with more duration and overlap will cool the motor down and make more power above 2700, but will feel weak at low rpm, especially with stock compression

The crank is basically three pieces, two look like thumb tacs placed top to top.  The connection between the two "flywheels" is a pressed in pin.  The pin is off center to produce the up down motion where the piston rods connect.  The runout is wobble as seen from either side of the bike due to the flywheels shifting on the pin.  Most builders weld this pin in place when the runout is close to zero. The wobble causes vibration and eventually this undesirable side to side motion destroys the oil pump that runs on the right hand output shaft.  Shortly there after you are on the ground.

I have a rear head gasket leak on my 08 SERK. These are the mods I am having done over this winter:

SE plate billet cam support plate #25282-07
Torrington bearing
Port / polish 110 SE Heads
Performance gasket kit
595 Cam
Stock pistons w/sets custom rings , with napier 2nd rings
SE 58mm TB
SE Roller Rockers
Performance lifters
SE Adjustable Pushrod
SE Rocker Arm Support
SE Cylinder Studs
Clearance Rocker Boxes & Cam Chest
Upgrade clutch springs
Chrome Billet Aluminum Covers
Hard saddle bags painted to match CVO color scheme

Just one man's opinion. Jessie is at the shop now going through her makeover. When she gets back she'll be a Bad Jessie!

Reading your list there begs a question.  If you're doing that much is it worthwhile to potentially be cutting a corner and not just replace the cylinders with Axtell or something other to get away from Harley's problems with their pieces?

Talked with Wes about the same idea as I had the same concerns. He recommends close inspection of stock cylinders and make a determination based on this. That's why I'm hesistant to diamond cut the heads/cylinders.

I'm doing it the way the man recommends it be done.

It's difficult to argue with listening to the advice of the pros that are paid to give that advice.  Of course it's not their money on the line if it comes back apart again :huepfenlol2: .

Just for comparison's sake; what's the cost of a set of jugs versus the labor bill to R&R the top end a second time?

Wes gave me the same advice...but for another $700 or so....had to go with the Axtell's...
