Factory Alarm a Silent One?
« on: December 24, 2007, 10:28:57 AM »

Perhaps I am not reading the manual correctly, but if I am then the 2008 smart alarm only flashes the directionals and disarms the ignition?  I would have thought that it would have at least honked the horn if the alarm was triggered.  Flashing the directionals would not deter even a halfhearted thief.  Why would anyone install an alarm system that did not make a lot of noise if set off?

Do I need to purchase and install something additional in order to make the alarm audible?  How difficult/expensive is the process?

The '08 alarm can be set for chirp or chirpless mode when the system arms itself. It'll still sound when the bikes tampered with though. Your dealer should have walked thru the alarm system w/ you (mine did).

This is something that's been confusing me too.  I can't get the bike to go into chirp mode.  The manual makes it sound as though the smart siren or the smart siren II is optional and is required to enable the chirp, but if you keep the fob away from the bike and stand the bike up it chirps and if you turn on the ignition switch it makes a hell of a lot of noise!  Don't try this in a closed garage!  :nervous:  I'm going to try to set it in chirp mode again and see what happens.

Sounds like you need to get the siren module if you want one.  I'm not sure if the 08 CVO came with them.  Mine 07 did.  More of a PITA than anything.

When you mess with the bike the alarm should chirp or whistle and flash the lights as a warning before it goes off.  If you leave it alone then it will go back into armed mode.

I had to trailer mine to the dealer and as I was going down the street I started hearing this strange noise behind me - wheel bearing?  loose hitch?  Glanced in the mirror and the bike turn signals are flashing every now and then.  Just enough distance and metal between the fob in my pocket and the bike.  Fortunately didn't hit any bumps large enough to quite set it off.  I haven't become entirely used to the thing yet; there have been several times I've looked like a guy getting off a spooked horse after it flashes at me because I needed to move it in the garage.

I like mine in chirp mode.  When someone messes with it it begins to chirp.  If my fob is in my pocket I simply need to go near the bike to disarm.  I usually make a little show out of it by leaning on the TP and caressing the pad and telling her quietly, "It's OK Daddy's right here....."

Then I tell the offender that it's like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, no one can touch her but me...... (I should change that to Christine, it's more accurate.....)

My 2005 SE Fat Boy came with the siren and it chirps when you turn the alarm on or off. It also chirps if you just barely move the bike, when the alarm is set. That is to help you remember the alarm is set.

I would go back to the dealership and have them check your system.  The 08's have the same smart alarm as the 07's and you can put it either in the "chirp" mode to let you know via an audible chirp that the bike has armed, or the non-chirp which just flashes the turn signals.  Either way, move your key fob well away from the bike and see if the siren chirps or goes off...if it doesn't, there may be something wrong with your siren module and it needs to be checked.  Hope this helps.

There are two additional modes, Service and Transport.  In transport mode, the motion detect feature is disabled.

She might just be a little cranky and was complaining about riding in an open trailer.....
