Can you have painted exhaust?
« on: December 31, 2007, 10:20:37 PM »

My husband was doing some research in getting either my old ruined exhaust ceramic coated, or I have to buy new.  While looking around, I saw the powder coating.  Can you have your exhaust powder coated?  I have never seen it, but can it be done?

Curious, if anyone knows anything about it.

It wouldn't survive the heat Candy.   There are various types of thermal coatings that can change a tint.  But not really "color" an exhaust.

Actually there is high heat flat black that will hold up. I've done it before, The only place it burns off is the first couple inches by the exhaust ports. That would be covered with the heat shields anyway. You could do some pretty cool stuff with an all black exhaust and some chrome heat shields. Lots of different looks come to mind  here's a few

smooth finish shields drilled out like the cooling shields on a .50 cal Browning
a set of the flamed heat shields like I've got on LD
bead blast an old scuffed up set of heat shields and powder coat them candy red

the only limit on this is your imagination

You're right of course Brian.  I just had Candy Ryan red colors in my head.  My bad.

What you have been told about powder coating is true. I powder coat for GE and yes it could be painted and look great at first, but the heat would continue to bake the coating and it would turn color. NOT pretty at all.

Candy I had both exhausts, the Borzilla and the Fat Cat thermal coated at HPC in Burlington NC. They have a black and a silver that looks close to chrome.

They are working on colors for the exhaust coatings. I have seen both the silver and black after being on  bikes for long periods of time and they look real gook. The black looks so good that many don't put the heat shields back on.

There is also black chrome if a black exhaust is what you want.

The ceramic coating isn't that expensive and it cuts down the heat emitted off the exhaust. I'm going to do some work to my stock head pipe and then have it ceramic coated. The coating I was looking at, looks like a polished aluminum, with the stock heat shields on you can't hardly see the actual pipes anyway. You have to be careful installing clamps as they can put scratches in the surface, and you might have to grind away some coating or coating at the slip joints, but you'd have to do that with the powder coating too.

Hogasm, I'd like to see the pipes you are talking about, and you may be closer than others for me to actually see them. I was not thinking black, but Twolanerider knew I was thinking one of the two Candy Cherry colors of our bikes.  But if chrome ----- looking ceramic is the way to go, would be interested in that too.  My pipes have gone down hill real quick ------ copper colored and actually started to get small rust spots on the megaphone area.  Sad, sad looking to say the least.  Unbalanced told me to try something I have not tried yet.  He suggested riding the bike, while having several big old towels soaking in ice.  Then as soon as you get off the bike, throw these towels over the pipes.  He said it is not a permanent fix, but even temporarily while I research solutions, it would help.  I'll let y'all know when I try it out.

HPC & Jet-Hot supposedly have a small selection of colors available, the attachment is from the Jet-Hot web site.  I haven't personally seen anything other than the flat black and the silver, so I have no idea how well the red for instance would go with your bike, or how well it would hold up.  The silver I saw actually looked better than the stock chrome once the heat shields were installed, since they weren't discolored near the heads like the stock chrome pieces.

Thank you Jerry.  I'd not seen nor didn't know of the color coatings for exhaust.  Aside from a few "tinting" options I'd seen previously that never held up well wasn't aware of this.

For an application with a heat shield over the pipe the color coatings seem problematic unless the heat shield could be treated, and would react in service, identically to the pipe.  Still allows lots of options for consideration though.
