Carroll Shelby's Super Snake
« on: January 03, 2008, 03:00:35 PM »

I was flipping thru channels the other day and Barrett Jackson was auctioning off Carroll Shelby's personal Super Snake AC Cobra. Twin supper chargered 800hp Cobra, went for 5.5 million!!!! The AC Cobra is one of my favorite cars, so I had to watch. Couldn't believe that price, but there were only two built, the other was for Bill Cosby. Cosby returned the car after he drove just once, said it was to fast! The guy who bought it was killed when he totaled the car, so there's only one!

Anybody know what the two propellers are in the big air intake?  Is it a car/boat combination?  Car/airplane?  Just chinzzy  decorations like on the trailer hitches?  As you can tell, I ain't much of a car guy.

Ride Safe.

it's also one of my favorite cars.  Can you imagine how much money some one has,  to drop 5.5 million on a car.  Would 5.5 m.= 30,000 for us?  If I had that car I'd run it.  Why buy it if you are never going to red line the tack! 8)

Several months back I heard Bill Cosby tell the story of when the Super Snake  was delivered to him in, I believe New York City. I don't remember exactly how the story went, but it sure was funny. The bottom line was, he said it was just way too much car for him.

PS. The auction that Talon was referring to was actually in January of 2007. I can't wait for the 2008 Scotsdale auction that starts in a couple of weeks.

I believe that was last years Barrett-Jackson Auction, they replayed it over the New Years holiday - this years is coming up January 15th weekend on SPEED channel. The website shows some of this years cars including a 66 Cobra S/C 427....Looks like lots of Shelby's this year, and a bunch of Jesse James creations to be featured as well.

I attend the one in Palm Beach and if you ever get the chance it's well worth attending. Last year they were giving test rides in Z06's and a GT40 (driven by pro's) on a course. Can spend two days just walking through the cars and brings back lots of memories.

PS:the sale of the super snake, all the proceeds went to a charity. The guy who bought it is a regular at the auction and spends way more than 5 mill . That's one heck of a tax write off......

Because, unlike us, they won't be able to get any replacement parts if they break it....

you guys are funny, loved the line about the three wheeled bike....   :D

Yea, after driving it Bill used the experience to come up with new material. Below is a paste from the web.

Another non-competition 427 roadster was converted into a Super-Snake (CSX 3303) and given to Shelby's close friend, Bill Cosby. Cosby attempted to drive the super-fast Cobra, but had issues with keeping it under control. This was humorously documented in Cosby's album titled "Bill Cosby, 200 M.P.H.". Cosby then gave the car back to Shelby, who then shipped it out to one of their dealers in San Francisco, S&C Ford on Van Ness Avenue. S&C Ford then sold it to customer Tony Maxey. Maxey, suffering the same issues as Cosby did with the car, lost control and drove it off of a cliff, landing in the Pacific Ocean waters. It was eventually recovered and the wreckage was bought by Brian Angliss of CP Autokraft. He is expected to auction his restored version in the future.

This is the Super Snake for 2008........how much it would cost in 10 or 15 or 20 years?

Perhaps you can't wait for the spring 2008 release of the Shelby GT500KR. Or perhaps a 540-horse supercharged Mustang is "merely adequate." What you need, then, is a Super Snake.

An ultravenomous version of the GT500, the Super Snake is a pure Shelby special-a limited-edition, hyperpowered Mustang built with mostly Shelby parts in the company's Vegas assembly facility. Deliver your GT500 to Shelby, fork over the requisite cash (pricing had not been set at press time, but expect to pay around $10K for the upgrade), and in a few weeks you'll have a Super Snake of your very own.

The bodywork closely mirrors the KR's-including a KR hood, hood pins, Shelby stripes, brake ducts, and the 20-inch forged Alcoa rims seen on the KR showcar. Inside, the Super Snake sports new gauges (boost/oil and fuel pressure), custom Shelby sill plates, a Ford Racing short-throw shifter, and a numbered dash plaque.

The best stuff lies under the hood. Utilizing the KR's cold-air intake and a new, larger-capacity Ford Racing supercharger, the Super Snake will romp with over 600 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, standard. Not enough? With optional tuning, Shelby will provide up to 725 ponies providing you're prepared to give up your warranty. This special Shelby will also get the Ford Racing Handling Pack, including stiffer, adjustable dampers, lowering springs, a front strut tower brace, and beefier stabilizer bars. The lower 3.73 rear axle of the GT500KR should provide for some blistering acceleration figures and the Baer six-piston brakes with super-sized rotors are employed to bring the Super Snake back to a standstill.

Shelby says the Super Snake will be in even shorter supply than the GT500KR. Production will start late this year, with most required parts also available separately from both Ford Racing and Shelby Automobiles by June. Earsplitting burnouts soon to follow.

I saw that on SPEED as well, gorgeous!

I was living at Tahoe when Cosby got the car from Carroll who owned both a motel ( the Sky Terrace) and the local Ford dealership. As my dad was the fire chief , I got a chance to tag along when he did the fire inspections and got to meet Carroll.

Cosby was appearing at Harrah's and had picked up the Cobra before a show, he took it over Spooner Summit between South shore and Carson City , it's a fast road , and he ended up flyin down one way , the cops tried to catch him , he hung a U -turn and went flying back towards Tahoe when they road blocked him .  When he got out he was just like " tow it , bill me for the ticket and get me back for the show"

Ford has re-intoduced the Super Snake Shelby , based on the current GT 500 , 605 hp!
Nice cover article in the December Road and Track.
