fuel escaping through breather vent
« on: January 07, 2008, 07:47:02 PM »

about 20,000 miles ago, I put my breather to atmosphere(the ground).because of oil coming out of my air cleaner ,well this week, i thought it was leaving a good spot wherever I went ,,,so i rigged it to where the breather was going into a tupperware 1pt. container,,,drilled a few vent holes ,and wala, oil is catched in this container...well went for a 20 mile ride ,,,and its mostly fuel..about 3 thimble fulls...any insight on fuel coming out of the breather?/ maybe rings?? 95ci fltrsei2..carburated

intresting! the two breathers on the head vent crankcase. is your plumbing just from the breathers to the ground only? is there any fuel smell in your motor oil? the only other thing i can think of is the fuel overflow tube that drips out onto the ground below bike

Good point Van makes Marc. You converted to a carb and have a fuel overflow from the carb. Are you sure it's coming from the oil breather line? If it is, that can't be good. Means you have gas in your oil. If that's the case, I'd be careful using it. You could wipe it out from lack of lubrication, as the gas dilutes the oil. Confirm where it's coming from. If it's definitely the oil breather, it's gotta be rings for it to mix with the oil and make it back up to the head breather. But you should smell gas in your oil tank too if that's the case.

Yes, both head vents, tee together in the air box,and have a 5/16 line leaving the air box to the plastic container,,pics to come later,,it for sure is coming from the breather,,I never shut my petcock off,,If I have a bad needle float valve,,and the petcock is on,,overnight it is washing into my cylinders?? that is what I'm thinking..shut the petcock off last nite,,if it dont do it today,,i will check float needle,,,and will also check for gas smell in my oil,,thanks fellas

The overflow of the float bowl would dump gas directly from the carb into the intake manifold, and into the cyls. I don't see how it would come out the oil breather line from there. I guess it could leak back to the air box too. You running a sealed airbox, not an open A/C assembly? Why not vent the oil breather lines from the heads, directly to the ground, and stay out of the A/C assembly completely?

this was a 3 dollar fix ,,did'nt know if there was a kit to relocate both vents to atmosphere,,and for the money ,this does the same thing,,have a k&n filter with the holes for the breathing tubes taped off,,guess its hard to picture,,again i will post a pic or 2 later,,I did go home for lunch and rode her back to work,,well see...this is a first for me,,and actually till about 40,000 miles ..it was venting back into carb (stock configuration) was not untill I had oil running on my leg I put it to the ground(atmosphere)..seen plenty of oil come out of evo vents ,,especially after a long winter sitting ,,but never fuel,,,does not smoke at all, but does consume a small amount of oil :confused5: f/n stumped on this one ,,,might just go for a motor if it is a teardown,,If I do it myself ,,it will be another money pit (meaning I will have to buy all the bells and whistles)gear drive ,cams, headwork ,etc.....but the time I'm done ,,could had gotten a new motor anyway,,ok i'm rambling now.... :D well see what is up ,

well, just walked out to the bike ,,more fuel in the container,, petcock was off last nite ,and the float bowl was empty till I turned the fuel on today(changed a jet last nite)..so much for a bad float valve,,had it in for service about 3 months ago,, had to do lifters,,they replaced the breather valves at that time...man ,no sleep tonite :confused5:

How does it run? Any problems? Like Howie said, I don't think the gas is coming from the breathers. Your bowl shouldn't be empty, but don't know why it would drain? What carb are you running??

the bowl was empty cause I removed it last nite to do a jet change,,kept the fuel off till today ,so I asume the bowl stayed dry till I turned the petcock on today,,it is fur sure ,,100% coming from the breather line,,never had the overflow tube on my carb,,,

Have you drained the oil and checked it? If your sure it from the breather, I do a compression check on both cylinders. I wouldn't ride it if you think it's in the oil. One thing I didn't see here, How is it running?

runs strong ,,runs great,,
I went out to empty the container b/4 my ride home,,thought it was fuel, cause it sure is not oil,,has a faint smell of fuel,, but has a water texture to it, and more clear then fuel is...everyone thinks i'm crazy anyway,,but it is what it is..I poured it into my hand,,mostly water..
