Heated Grip Install
« on: January 09, 2008, 07:22:14 PM »

Just snagged a set of HD heated grips on EBAY.  Great deal but instructions are not included.  Has anyone tackled this installation themselves or is it best left to "professionals"?  Anybody still have their installation instructions and if so, could you please scan them in?

Cheers and thanks in advance,

Blue, I've been able to get accessory instructions from my dealer in similar situations.  The one I used to live nearby kept them on file behind the parts counter and would photocopy whatever I needed.  Not sure the one where I live now does that, or if yours would, but worth a try if someone doesn't scan/post a copy of instructions for you here.

My dealer will gladly pull up the instructions on HD-net and print them out for me. I've done this several times over the years and they have never had a problem with it.

Chief and 103tHunder thanks for the advice.  Good info to know for all installs.

Thanks Silver-Black.  I talked to the dealer today and they told me to stop by the parts counter and they should be able to get me what I need.  I'll shout back at ya if I run into any problems getting them.  Thanks again.

Re: Heated Grip Install - Grips Have Failed ALREADY!!
« Reply #6 on: March 10, 2008, 02:02:19 PM »

An brief update on my heated grip install.  The grips have already failed only six weeks after their installation.  The dealer confirmed this morning that they have stopped working (are getting power but are not heating up) and commented that in their experience AT LEAST 1 of 3 pairs fail very early in their life.  Said they have one customer who is on his 3rd set and was not able to get 100 miles out of either of the first two pair.  Since this was an EBAY item, there was no "warranty".  I know...I know...I should have known better than to buy a used electrical part  :-\.  It sure was an expensive six weeks of heat ($250).  Has anyone had any luck fidgeting with these things when they fail?  I understood that the switch can be touchy and thought about giving it a "gentle" whack with a rubber hammer  ;).  The only redeeming outcome is that the these (other than the on/off switch) are exactly the same design as the original grips and the original grips were beginning to show their age.

Since my hands are the only thing I am fighting in the cold, I have been very hesitant to go the plug-in route (e.g. Gerbings), but maybe that's the best way.  And frankly, in extreme cold (20ish), the back of my fingers would still get cold (tolerable, but cold).

Heated Grip Saga - They Have Failed Already!!
« Reply #7 on: March 11, 2008, 08:19:33 AM »

Several weeks ago, I was looking for instructions for the installation of heated grips and several of you were kind enough to steer me in the right direction.  The grips were installed successfully on January 15th.  However, when I jumped on the bike Sunday (after it sitting for about 10 days while I was traveling), the grips to heat up.  Only 7 weeks after installation! I know...I know...I should have known better than to buy a used electrical part  .  It sure was an expensive six weeks of heat ($250).  Has anyone had any luck fidgeting with these things when they fail?  I understood that the switch can be touchy and thought about giving it a "gentle" whack with a rubber hammer.

Any ideas on the mechanics on the grips?

Cheers,

A lot of us have installed the Heat Demons handlebar heaters and have worked great thus far.  They install inside the handlebars and you install the grip of your choice.  Install instructions can be found on www.symtec-inc.com   and Kuryakyn also now sells them.

If you do a search on this site and type in heat Demons, many threads will be found.

Thanks, Boatman.  That's what I was thinking of.  But I was thinking they attached at the clamps for the hand controls.  Sorry for the confusion. :confused5:
