Several weeks ago, I was looking for instructions for the installation of heated grips and several of you were kind enough to steer me in the right direction. The grips were installed successfully on January 15th. However, when I jumped on the bike Sunday (after it sitting for about 10 days while I was traveling), the grips to heat up. Only 7 weeks after installation! The dealer confirmed this morning that they have stopped working (are getting power but are not heating up) and commented that in their experience AT LEAST 1 of 3 pairs fail very early in their life. Said they have one customer who is on his 3rd set and was not able to get 100 miles out of either of the first two pair. Since this was an EBAY item, there was no "warranty". I know...I know...I should have known better than to buy a used electrical part . It sure was an expensive six weeks of heat ($250). Has anyone had any luck fidgeting with these things when they fail? I understood that the switch can be touchy and thought about giving it a "gentle" whack with a rubber hammer. The only redeeming outcome is that the these (other than the on/off switch) are exactly the same design as the original grips and the original grips were beginning to show their age.
Since my hands are the only thing I am fighting in the cold, I have been very hesitant to go the plug-in route (e.g. Gerbings), but maybe that's the best way. Any ideas on the mechanics on the grips?
Cheers,
Blue
