Grizzly,

Check your other parts to see if you have any joints!!

Napalm,

The rest of the bike's paint is looking great!  There are some spots where it looks like there is a join, but it was done very well...  I guess they knew that the other ares are more visible than the TP???

I realize that working with gold leaf is tricky and takes a lot of care, but this job is just not up to par.  Especially when we're talking about a very expensive $$$ CVO that one of their selling features IS the unique paint job.

I had my '91 Heritage custom painted back in 1993 and the painter used gold leaf pin striping and it sure puts the '08 Anniversary Duracell to shame.  Thanks for the thought Naplam, but I think this boils down to very poor workmanship.

The reason for the poll is to simply find out if I'm in the majority, and it appears I am.  Thanks for participating Naplam.

Take care & ride safe,
Grizzly

You comparison to a one-off custom job is an important point. You're comparing a factory, production line paint job to a custom job. They are not the same. I have found that out very recently in realizing just how much $$$ that flawless custom paint job costs.

The CVO paint jobs are unique in the fact that there aren't as many of them as the standard color schemes, but they are not one-off custom paint jobs. They are still production line paint jobs. Granted, a custom painter would not let that tour pack out with that join, nor the wrinkle in the clear, but for a production line paint job, they are some of the best out there. They're just not perfect.

I really love the amount of flake in the lid. I wish my custom job had as much.  ;D

I have the same overlap on my bike. I am not disturbed by it.

Well, I guess I expect too much???

I've always been told that all CVO's come from a separate line with the MoCo's "best of the best" working the line!

I realize that a one off paint job will be better than an assembly line bike, and although the paint on my Duracell is exceptional compared to most of the stock Ultra's, I have seen better pin striping on the stock Ultra's that come from the regular line and that is not what one would expect.

So far with the poll there are 3 that do NOT have an over lapping and 8 that do...

I have to believe there are a lot more Duracells out there and hopefully they see the poll and let us know about their paint - good or bad.  Hopefully the good ones will begin to post photos which I need to show my dealer that it CAN and HAS been done correctly.

Again, thanks to all that take the time to vote in the poll, and let's see your photos PLEASE.

Thanks!
Grizzly

My Duracell has a paint flaw in the clearcoat on the tank that the dealer found during their inspection.  They ordered me a new tank (which just came in).  To be honest the only place I was able to see the flaw was at the dealer under the uniform fluorescent lights of their detailing area.  I have tried since then to see the flaw under sun light, in my garage, in the shade, etc. and have not been able to see it.

I think if you look hard enough at anything you will eventually see a flaw of some kind.  The Mona Lisa does not have eyebrows but is still considered a great work of art.  I guess it all boils down to how perfect you can afford to make it.  I will look for a seam when my new tank comes but I don't think that would bother me much.  If the paint flaked, the color did not match or was uneven, or the two sides of the tank were asymmetric that would bother me.

I also just noticed a flaw in the clearcoat on my tank (SERK Anniversary), kind of looks like a large smudge in it that can clean up, but it doesn't. I hope my dealer can make it look right or replace my tank. I don't know how they address paint issues. It's my first Harley. Taking it in for first 1000 service, pipes, race tuner and tour pak. Love it, great ride. Dean

Yep, sounds the same as mine.  It was like the clearcoat had run, but you could not feel it.  The dealer found it during their prep and ordered a new tank for me.  I just need to find time to bring my bike in to swap the tank now that it has come in.  I was hoping to get 500 miles to have it dyno tuned at the same time, but since it's supposed to snow not it looks like I won't get the chance until spring.

Yup, it does sound like the same issue. Can't feel it and sticks out like a sore thumb once you notice it. How long does it take to swap out a tank? Dean

No issues on mine.  Can't even find where there is any sign of a seam.  I attached a couple of pictures.  If that was mine, I would make the dealer replace it!

It's not an overlap. It's a misalignment where the gold leaf starts and ends. Very minor, about 1/64" and I am not bothered by it.

Out of curiousity, I'd like to see the poll results. I won't vote, since I don't have one. But then you can't see the results. Would you mind changing the poll format to allow everyone to see the results. Thank you. :2vrolijk_21:
