2008 Amp Removal
« on: January 16, 2008, 10:11:14 AM »

I began the rear amp removal last night.  The hardest part was getting to the power connection by the battery.  On the 2008, the ECM is mounted on top of the battery, so it is quite packed arounded the battery.

It appears that the wiring to the left and right rear volume/PTT/etc. controls that are mounted in the speaker pods is part of the amp wiring harness that runs up to the radio.  Has everyone been taking all of this out, and only leaving the rear speaker wires for when the TP is put back on?

Will be taking off the fairing tonight to disconect at the radio.

The amp harness is an "overlay" harness for the CVO's. What the overlay harness does is interupt the signals at each of the four speakers and routes them back to the amp. Then back to the speakers. What you need to do (and appear that you have already started) is to start at the amp and work your way forward. Along the way cutting the wire ties and unplugging as you go. As you get into each of the rear pods you will be unplugging two plugs, a male and female. When these are removed you will plug in the remaining male and female plugs together in the pod. The harness typically runs over the top of the tank and under the canopy into the fairing. There you will have the speaker connections and a plug at the top rear right side to disconnect. remember to reconnect the remaining plugs when you remove the overlay plugs. When the harness is removed you should be able to play your radio normally.

Hope this helps, If needed i'll PM you my number to go throught it over the phone. I've done many of these.

HD-Dude,

Thanks,  I looked at it last night, and it now makes sense.  Will get it done this weekend along with the removal TP conversion.  No riding though as 6 inches of snow is coming today.

Jim,

What tag bracket/holder are you using?  Looks VERY nice.  Is that the stock seat?

First I installed HD part # 53702-04A Rear turn signal bracket (like used on a Street Glide) and then added the Kuryakyn Part # 3163 curved license plate mount. I also needed to add a kit to remove original license plate bar, it is part of the rear fender support system. Also added Gem led bullet lights at rear.

Jim,

What is the part number and manufacture for the license plate bar?

Not quite sure what you are asking, the Kuryakyn Part # 3163 curved license plate frame mounts to the HD part # 53702-04A Rear turn signal bracket. I used Auto Gem Shotgun light kit  https://auto-gem.com/ to replace HD factory license plate bar. Let me know if I can be of help for your project.

Jim,

I've always wanted to do that, but always come back to thinking that some frame rigidity would be lost by removing the hoop. It's a pretty beefy piece that ties the rear of the frame together. I know lots of people do it, but I'm just too chicken to lose it.

Can you tell any difference in the way it rides with it gone?

Considering it's about 15 degrees and snowing it will be a couple of months before I get to ride again. The winters are great if you like spending time and money on your bike and not feel bad that you are not riding. I have to tell you that the frame is very solid back there. So I really dont know!

I can see it going either way. The shocks have no lateral loading, so it's not like they can shove it around. I just don't know the answer. Without a TP sitting on it maybe the strength isn't needed.  :nixweiss:

It's a popular mod, so if it was real bad I guess more people would say so.

Chief,

I've done the same thing to my Road King and have not noticed any difference, I'm planning on doing this to my 07 SECU in just a few weeks. But I never looked at it as if its structural, My be something to think about.

Jim,

Is this part number the entire tail light, turn signal and bracket? or can I just but the bracket?
