Ok, time to stop screwing around and tell everyone thanks. I had to drive to back and forth to Springfield, MO tonight so ended up being gone when I was no longer gone anymore. Figures.
It would be nearly impossible (read, oh crap that'd take a long time) to get back in touch with everyone individually that's been in touch with me the last several days. The outpouring has been immense and humbling. To find there are that many willing to take an interest on one's behalf was amazing. It's gotten bandied about here before all too easily; but you all really are a special group of people.
The number of messages and calls was touching and unexpected. And it never abated. People I knew and people I didn't. As we talked we laughed, we reacted, we shared, in a couple of cases we even cried. If I'd ever begun to worry over any sense of loss that concern was quashed immediately. It was obvious the friends were in no way ethereal, more real than I ever imagined and numbered far greater than I knew. Just tonight you all literally filled the answering machine with friends calling to say welcome back. The calls and messages in these last days have numbered literally in the hundreds. Damn.....
During the several day sojourn it also wasn't even necessary to visit the site; at least for the good stuff. So many were taking time from their busy days to forward on the bits that were important. No one was taking any credit. They just wanted someone on the outside who couldn't look in to know they cared. Indeed, a very special group of people. It's a documentary record I'll cherish and hang on to.
Now, before this gets too long, I seem to remember there being a website here with good people and good fun scattered all around. Time to get this party started.
