CVO trailer towing
« on: January 18, 2008, 08:14:41 PM »

Just asking here. I am thinking of towing a trailer behind my 08 Anni and was wondering if anybody out there does. I haven't found a hitch that fits the CVOs yet either. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks

bushtec makes the best concealable hitch that you can tow other trailers with.  There are photos in this forum of them installed and you can barely tell.  They'll even install at rallies while you wait which will give you more time to trailer shop.....

No hitch at all, just bear pooping in the woods.

Yep, Bushtec.  Bushtec is the only hidden hitch I have found that will fit.  BTW, Hitchdoc will not fit, so don't even try.  Hitchdoc is too narrow for the CVO bike.

You will have to get some type of fender rail, or a light like TwoLane has (shown above).  You will also need a electrical isolator...my bushtec hitch came with one.

So what are you planning on pulling >> small cargo trailer or small tent trailer?

Reb, the isolator that Bushtec provided was problematic in my case.  Above and beyond that the thing occupies space where there is little to be had to begin with.  Would be better if they supplied it with rear harness mating terminals as a one piece interconnect/trailer pigtail.  But they don't.  On top of all that the one I got just didn't work.

Unit failed within an hour of installation.  No installation problems either.  Was never really sold on the absolute requirement of it being there to begin with.  Chicken little-ism going on there a bit.  But just for grins cut it all out and wired the replacement back in.  That one was DOA.

After that just said screw it.  Single trailer interconnect/pigtail connector with each leg to the trailer independently fused.  Just like it would've have been done had I not read the directions to begin with.  Worked fine last summer.

TwoLane,

Mine has worked so far, but I have not pulled the trailer much yet.

I'll keep an eye on it when I start pulling the trailer again when we get warm weather again.

TwoLane,

Mine has worked so far, but I have not pulled the trailer much yet.

I'll keep an eye on it when I start pulling the trailer again when we get warm weather again.

Reb, after the first failure and followed by a more thorough reading of the bike schematics than I'd ever done before I spoke with a very forthright rep at Bushtec. The conversation basically ended with a recognition that the isolator was a good idea that really wasn't as absolute a requirement as all the warnings would have one believe (as was obvious to begin with).  Was also told they do have problems with a few of them, but that problems seem to occur very early if they're going to occur.

My first one didn't fail with only the the bike on the load.  It failed after the trailer had been added for perhaps 20 minutes of local use just getting a feel for the rig.  I really don't have a worry about the install without the isolator with each leg fused.  Even less so because the trailer has LEDs in all the lights.  So very small load added anyway.

After going through this with my original installation I ran in to another thread somewhere with someone else describing having done a similar final installation.  I think I remember that being Jerry (GRC) but wouldn't swear to it.  So having done it this way was by no means a novel approach.

And, as one last addition, since the option was a real one I actually quite preferred not having the isolator in there with that extra rat's nest of a wiring installation it required.  It could never be made neat and tidy enough to actually satisfy me.  If they really want folks to use it all the time they've got to make it as part of an interconect/pigtail harness for trailer install.  That Medusa's head mess thing is just a pain.

One other option is from McHitch  I have one and love it.  I will get a picture of it tomorrow and add to the site.  Toe check it out the website is www.mchitch.com.  I pull a Timeout Trailer and had no problems.
