HD 6 speed
« on: April 11, 2005, 05:38:31 PM »

would like to have the opinions of the 6 speed from SERK owners.  am seriously contemplating the purchase, but am curious about what I can expect performance and mileage wise.

thanks

Welcome to the site Ron. I too studied on this six pack subject for a long couple of weeks and just could'nt get it off of my mind. Trying to justify which way to go I ask my wrench man. He said its nice to have but he thinks that six gear would be used very little riding thru the country and in groups going 65and 70 MPH. But if you don't mind dropping 3 or 4 grand and like to hang on the handle bars going 90 MPH  and feeding the bears for speeding, go for it. It's a free world, just cost a little money for this kind of freedom. don

decided against the gear change after speaking with my wrench.  I am basically looking for the overdrive for the long runs.

Switched to a Baker 6 speed after my stock tranny main bearing went out on last year's Laughlin River Run.

Ron, I have the HD 6 speed on my 2001 RKC with the 3.37 gear ratio (stock that year for EFI motors, HD wanted EFI to be faster from stop than a carb bike), at 75 mph I am at 3000 rpm, this is perfect for me at four lane speeds, at 65 mph I shift to the sixth speed
I do not get any better gas mileage, actually less, but I ride ten mph faster than before the six speed, the bike just purrs at 75 mph
I do a two week ride of around 5k miles each summer, usually to western USA, lots of wide open spaces to let bike run

Sturbee,

What mileage do you get on those long runs with the 6SP?

Gas mileage is not any better due to higher cruising speed in 6th gear, the faster you go the greater the wind resistance, most HD's loose gas mileage over 65 mph, double your speed and the wind resistance is four times as much
If you were to ride a bicycle over two routes of the same length, one flat and the other with large hills, the flat route would take less time, the downhill high speed wind resistance would slow the bike
