Idling issues with Magneti-Marelli system
« on: January 27, 2008, 05:36:23 PM »

I apologize if this has been covered in advance. I have a 2001 SERG and started having idle problems 2 years ago and my local dealership has not been able to figure it out. They believe it is a sensor that is going out but has not reached the point of no return yet. They do not want to start swapping out sensors as they have to charge me for them.

Issue is when I start it on warm humid mornings it will not idle without me holding the throttle as it will die. Once I ride the bike then it is ok typically. This is the only time I have idle issues is when it is humid. Other than that this bike runs great. When the bike was idling normally I took some WD-40 and sprayed all around the throttle body to see if there were air leaks and the idle did not change so I do not think I have gasket issues. Can you clean sensors? Since I am cursed with the old (2001) fuel injection system the only sensors I have are the Intake Air Temperature and Throttle Position Sensor. The 2002 Module has the Idle Air Control sensor as I have had people suggest to check that but my EFI does not have that.

Thank you for the help.

Does your dealership have a Dyno?  I have seen the same issue with the mag mar and have seen it rectified by doing a mag mar fuel tune on the dyno.

They do but they do not have anyone that is educated enough to run it. That would cost you $80.00 an hour instead of the standard low hourly rate :-)

I would suggest finding a different dealer with some dyno knowledge.  The fuel tune will make a world of difference.  Good luck.

I have a 2001 Ultra and was having an idle problem for a while.  Would be just fine then idle would drop to 7-800 rpm.  I had to use the throttle to keep it running.  I read on another board somewhere about a small port at the top of the TB that gets clogged. It is right over the bores. You have to take off the A/C backplate to get to it.  I cranked it up and sprayed carb cleaner into that  and the TB until it would start to choke.  Has idled perfect since.  Hope this helps

Thank you as I am up for trying anything. The dealership is of no help as their idea of troubleshooting is waiting till the bike is dead on the road and then they know what to change out.

the iac motor on marelli is know to fail. either with symptoms like yours, or unexpected high idle, then settles back down. you can hold  your finger in it and start the bike to feel if it moves, and clean the port as mentioned above.
