FRONT MOTOR MOUNT
« on: April 11, 2005, 08:17:11 PM »

Going over the SERK checking the torque on the front motor mount which was ok, but notice the rubber on the bottom side, was spliting about half way around it. At 15000 miles, a couple of hole shots and a few wheelies latter, riding double, I'm not surprised.  My question is the oil lines on the oil cooler, which they had just a trace of oil weeping at the connection to the motor, which was probably do to the loose mount caused by the excessive motor movement.  I'm going to change out the rubber hose oil lines at the same time of the front motor mount replacement. Is there something better than the stock hoses and stainless steel hose clamps? Bradded would be nice but I don't  think they will make the bends. Has anybody been there, done that?  Thanks don

As far as the front mount goes check out this
http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=g1;action=display;num=1099941892

My dealer  as going to do the oil lines for me in bradded But when he told me how much.
Said fix what you had to for the leak (new clamps) .
So I would have to think they would work.

Lets see what others have to say.

I replaced the front engin mount saturday. It took a little while todo the job.Couldn't tell if it run much smoother, maybe just a little stiffer than before. I still got this chirpping sound after I ride about 40 mile under no load at 1800 to 2000 rpm in all the gears. Sounds like it's comming from the left muffler area.  never had the chirp till I repace the rear tire 4000 miles ago .             Has anybody ever had this problem?   Some days no chirp at all .It's beginning to get to me .             thanks don

Don, I had it on my softtail........it was the belt alignment on the rear wheel sprocket.  Correct alignment should eliminate it.  Lots of people try spraying stuff on the belt, but that's only a temporary fix.   [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Spydglide   Iwas thanking it was the exhaust or the belt because it was ok before I removed the rear tire. The rear axle has got the newer cam style to tighten the rear belt. I'm guessing the belt alinment is made with the front stablizer link, I'v always notice the belt never ran on center of the rear pulley. When I roll the tire backwards it does change position.  Maybe I should take it to the dealer, But I would like to solve this problem myself. I'll go to the shop manual and check out belt alinment. thanks Spydglide I'v got new ammonition for the chirpping war.        Ride on    don

I check the belt and it was loose. 7/8" Ajusted it to 3/8" at 10 lbs. of up pressure. Took a road test feeling I got it solves this time. After 20 miles the chirp was still there, no better or worse. Think I'll try a different left side muffler before I take it back to the HD dealer.

Don, I'll be interested to hear what you find out.......if the dealer finds the 'chirp'.  I'm in N.C. and had numerous wrenchs try to solve it with no luck.  Finally on a trip out west. a mechanic at the Blackfoot HD Dealership in Idaho too the time to make a jig and align the rear wheel perfectly and 'wa-laa!' the chirp was gone.  Had to be the edge of the belt on the side of the sprocket as best we could determine.  Let me hear what you determine is causing yours when you discover the culprit.  It can be aggrevating!   [smiley=furious.gif]

Spyidglide. Took a poor boys lazer beam ( a string from the side wall of the back tire to the side wall of the front tire and trued the rear wheel as best as possiable. Never could get it right on the money. The belt wants to ride up against the left side of the rear belt sproket. Took another road test, sure enough after 20 miles the chirp came back to haunt me. Pulled into to Mc Donalds got a cup of coffee and thought about it. Whent back out in the parking lot, took the tool bag out and lossen the left muffler and wiggled it around and set it back about 3/16' rear torque and road test. No chirp. Just maybe I got  it this time. Still got an appointment with the dealer to check the the rearwheel alinement. I'll post the out come. don

Don, maybe that was it.  Sure hope so, a something like that can worry the bejesus out of you.  Oh, a buddy of mine that used to be a Harley Dealer in the dark ages said they used to use long floursent tubes as the poor man's lazer.  Probably a little more of a straight edge.  Be interesting to see how close you were w/ the string compared to the lazer, huh?

Spidglide. I'ts Kinda funny what a man will think up to get a job done. Never tried the tube. I'm going to go and try to work on that alinement today again , got some 8' lights that should do the job. Does the belt run in the center of your rear sproket?  don

Don, both bikes have the belt running slightly more toward the outer edge. Neither is centered, but no chirps (lately).  Maybe you've solved yours re-positioning the left muffler.  Hope so. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Well, it has happend!  My front motor mount has cracked about 1/3 of the way around.  My dealer bless his heart can get it in if I leave it for a week.  Though she is still under warranty I have ordered a velvaride front mount and plan to change it out myself.  I am sure I could accomplish this without a service manual but would like to have the "real" procedure for reference.  Of course the dealer does not keep the book in stock thus another 1 week wait.  Would someone be willing to scan the applicable pages or tell me what the procedure is including proper torque on all the bolts?

Thanks!

Dave

I have 9000 miles on her but never let a drop of oil contact the mount.  I have also begun to wonder if there is a correlation between excessive movement at the front mount and the oily line at the transmission engine interface some of us have experienced.  Since I have had this problem I will monitor it after installing the new mount and report back.  I suspect there will be no change but at the least I can report on any change positive or negative in relation to vibration and the velva ride mount.  Now if only I had an accurate means to measure vibration.  I have the equipment to measure sound pressure levels but not vibration.  Anyone have a seismometer?
