MoCo recent dealer winter meeting
« on: January 29, 2008, 01:03:47 PM »

The dealer shows are when we used to wait with baited breath for new trinkets to be released.  It was a twice yearly Christmas when the chrome budget would get adjusted and beers would be planned for to be consumed in the garage while adding or changing this or that.

The last several, however, have been much like many of HD's other efforts anymore.  Mostly underwhelming.  The current round of new parts releases (at least for dressers) was pretty ho hum.  The company always shows pictures of lots of new custom paint.  Margins must be excessive on custom tins....  They sure offer a lot......

Not a lot different, really new, novel, showing a different spin, covering a different area, taking a different approach or really terribly interesting though.  At least not to my tastes.

They did offer power saddlebag locks as an accessory kit finally.  But a few of us have been there and done that on our own without waiting for them.  And their offering is still severely model year limited.  They've yet to make the HK radios available to years past; though we know it's possible.

It's easy to look at new accessory releases and think "well, everything has simply been covered already."  There's just not space for things new or interesting anymore.  At least from Harley that does seem to be the case.

Thank goodness it's not entirely the case though.  Just breezed through Kuryakyn's latest new product releases.  Found several new ideas, or new and interesting takes on old ideas.  Some were things I liked but likely wouldn't do.  Several are things I definitely will when the products hit the street though.

It's nice to see some companies still keep thinking more progressively and less sedately.  One doesn't have to be dangerously outside the box to still keep reshaping its edges.  In other words, boring sucks and not boring gets more of my chrome budget.

At least to my particular tastes here are a few things just from the one company that caught my eye for one reason or another.  There's ten or so from just one group of new or upcoming releases from but one little company in the aftermarket.  That's 10 or so more than Harley managed to interest me with.

I wonder if the new spots would accept HID?  :nixweiss:

I like the new spots, and a couple of other things as well... :2vrolijk_21:

Wonder how long it will take HD to buy the same thing from Kury and package it as HD?

Had the same thought Chuck.  At least seem to look longer from what can be made out in the photo.  Think it said they used H3 bulbs as well.  So at least from that perspective it's an option.

It's something I'll be paying attention to when they're actually released.

The spots caught my eye too TC.  Like the shape better.  Have looked at some of the headwinds products to replace our common looking round blobs.  But the mating surfaces were never quite right (and they're EXPENSIVE too).

For both the appearance and the potential of doing HID within them I'll be paying attention to these.

I also really liked those saddlebag latches.  The lighted ones.  That'll be something that will be real hard for me not do when they become available.

Crap, now I'm going to have to back through my own list again and mark the ones I liked and actually want to get versus the ones I just liked the look or idea of but won't actually do :huepfenlol2: .

That's really Kuryakyn's forte' TC.  Lots of their product line has been seen elsewhere first.  Our grip heaters is one of their more recent examples.

Just scanned through the list again.  The pieces I'll likely be constitutionally unable to avoid doing will be the lighted saddlebag latches and the lower saddlebag lights.  Those spotlights interest me a great deal also.  Might be interested in the timer cover too.  But would want to see how it hooks up and what it looks like in operation first.

I like the TourPak relocation bar.

I've had a bit of a problem after adding the '08 SERK leather TP on my bike.  Both my wife and I have, to put it politely, a few extra pounds and the distance between my back and her stomach is non existant.  Don't get me wrong, I love the padded back rest it provides, but hit really puts her in a position that is considerably farther forward than the stock passenger's back rest that came with the bike.

I redrilled my chrome mount plate to gain another 1.25" rearward mounting, but this would get us to the next step with lots of room either way, front to back.

On a side note, the new footboards on the back with the adjustable mounts really helped her reposition herself into a more comfortable riding position.

Thanks for the links.

Dan, that one got my eye as just a nice simple effective execution of a good and necessary idea.  And one that Harley just hadn't touched before.  George Winston has that nice relocating plate that poeple have been universally pleased with when used.  This is an even more direct approach that simply replaced one piece with another rather than adding a new piece to the mix.  I'm a fan of easy effective solutions.

Yea, I like the latches too...have been putting that one off.  Many designs I like out there, but I think some kind of light on the sides, or at least reflectors are a good idea.  Since I pulled them off the forks, I've been relutctant to change the latches because of the red reflectors, even though I've never liked them much, but those latches might be just the ticket.  I also like the bag lights, and the rear fender strip light...with what I've got on Wanda Junes a$$, those might be a nice addition.  Then her entire butt would be LED's.

Another nice peice for those who are more long legged would be the floorboard extender hickeys...I don't need forward, so put the spacers on already, but those look like a nice option for those who need things just a bit more forward, as well as out.

Really do like the spots though...with what I've got going with the "look" on Wanda June, they'd fit right in....better than the "frog eyed" things on there now.  I don't hate them, but it's something that definitely takes away from the lines of my bike.

Our stock spots aren't terrible.  They're just boring.  And the round bubble spot doesn't mate to the better looking bullet turn signal at all.  Have never completely liked that combination.  Headwinds makes spotlights like this photo.  Nice heavy beefy billet pieces.  But the mount to our brackets isn't right and they're over $700 for a pair.  I don't dislike our stock pieces enough to pay that much and gain a jury rigged mount in the process.

I've already got the color matched Street Glide light below the fender and like that a lot.  Very interested in the lower saddlebag lights to potentially complete the rear though.  Want to see better what housing is visible (if any) around the lights.  Already have power in the bags for spoilers and the HD lighted latches to can just tie in to existing source already in the bags.

The HD lighted latches aren't beautiful pieces.  But the light is bright and they are very functional. I liked having a side running light and turn signal enough to accept the rather boring look of the pieces.  This new option might be the best of both worlds though. Looks and function; gotta love it.

Being 6'5" I'm interested in the footboard extenders - out 1" and up 1", the HD ones only go up 1" and are really just the D shaped pans with the bolt holes repositioned up.

For the Road Gliders check the Nacelle / Gauge cover, pretty cool!
