So sad.
Every time I read one of these stories (8 kids last year in my area alone) I wish that the minimum drivers age would be raised.

Kids think they are invincible, every one of the fatals near me have involved 16-17 year old drivers and several kids in the vehicle. And each time the driver was on a "provisional" license, which was designed to minimize the multiple injuries to youngsters.
It hasn't worked yet.

It's tragic to lose loved ones,  but to lose a child is the most tragic.
My prayers go out to all who loved them.

I live within 5 miles of three large high schools - two of them over 2500 kids each.  My most terrifying driving (and riding) experiences involve kids going to and coming from one of these schools.  This is going to make me sound ancient, but when I was in high school, almost no one drove their own car to school.  They either walked or took a school bus.  Today, there are probably over 1000 cars coming and going to each of these schools, twice a day, with 16, 17 or 18 year old drivers.  Many are frequently on their cell phones or text messaging or have an Ipod stuck in their ear.  It is scary to watch and even scarier when amongst them on the bike.  They have no concept of how dangerous their actions are - they seem both fearless and oblivious.  Occasionally, when one or some of them are killed in a car accident, they put the obligatory cross at the side of the road with balloons and stuffed animals and a poster they all sign - and then continue the insanity.  I cannot imagine being a parent of one of these kids....  Very sad indeed...  :(
