SAT NAV QUESTION
« on: January 30, 2008, 06:11:43 AM »

Hi Guys, I have navigated my way around England and Europe on my Road King Classic for the past two years using my Zumo 550 without a hitch.  I have now said farewell to the Road King and I am waiting delivery of a new Duracell.  I am considering fitting the Zumo, but before I do, can anyone give me some idea has to how good, bad or indifferent the stock Sat Nav is, especially in Europe?

Thanks and Ride Safe.

Install the Zumo. I don't even use my stock one on the 07.

I can't speak for the European version but the US version is OK at best.  it keeps me from getting lost at least.  Here are some drawbacks:  The navigation CD must be in the CD player to use the NAV.  This eliminates using your CD while in NAV mode.  If the CD's are scratched or misplaced you can't use it all.  The screen for the NAV is the HK stereo screen which can be hard to read/see in bright sunlight and it's single color as well as not showing images of roads.  It does have canned images showing turn offs.  It gives you audio warning of turns over the stereo and/or headset.  I think mine is functional enough to not upgrade but if you already have a ZUMO what are you waiting for?  You can still remove it for other vehicles.

One of the best decisions I made when I got the bike was to pull the GPS module and antenna out and put it on ebay. It sold for over $800. I may lose some money on resale, but it won't be anything near the $832 I got for the GPS module.

Use your Zumo, it's a much better unit.  :2vrolijk_21:

What an amazing idea!  You can buy the Zumo for a little over $600 and still pocket $200!  I'll keep mine stock for now but you just planted a seed.....

Won't matter with your bike if you have it or not.  That new paint job is what people are going to be paying for. (in the unlikely event of a sale)

Remove the Claim Shell (Faring) And unplug it from the head (radio)unit.

Almost none. If you remove the outer fairing, you will see the antenna. Follow the wire and you will see where the module plugs into the back of the radio. You remove the two small torx screws and it just comes out of the radio. It is just a circuit board that slides into a slot.

The hardest part is finding the little dog-bone shaped plate to cover the new hole in the back of the radio. You can't get it from Harley and HK won't help you out either. I got mine from a really nice dude ;) who had one from installing the module on someone's bike and the plate is normally thrown away.

That's what I did before I got the plate. I found out that the HK radios are not sealed at all. There are actually open holes in the bottom, so a tight seal is not important.  :)

I like aushog's idea of pulling the unit and selling it. Maybe someone will want my old HD amp and harness too! I remember when gps was coming out in the 80"s, ours has about the same technology. You would think HD would put out something better on our bikes!
