Bali, Indonesia has a day called "Quiet Day" where you have to stay in your room or on the hotel property all day and night. The belief is that evil spirits come out and fly around taking people who are out away. The Bali people construct these figures to scare away the spirits. The next day they have a big party and burn the figures.
