Well, I guess I could post my SBC experience FWIW. I made arrangements with SBC in 2004 to do a stroker build ( S&S 106 ) on an 03 E-Glide. We drove 2500 miles round trip to drop off the bike on a Monday, do a family vacation to the Grand Canyon, then pick up the bike on Friday. That part of the agreement was kept. After returning home and running the bike, the motor was making a lot of heat, smoking, and using a lot of oil. If you ran your finger around the end of the muffler, you would have a finger of black goo. Also, part of the agreement was that I definately wanted my cruise control ( CV 40 carb ) to continue to work, so I asked about the SE CV44 as it was compatible with Cruise Control. Charlie recommended the CV 51 and said he could make a bracket to allow the cruise to work. They did put the CV 51 on the bike, but after many phone calls for the aforementioned bracket, SBC never did come thru. Then as the bike continued to smoke, Charlie told me to use dino oil to see if that would help. No suprises, it didn't. There was no way I could drive back the 2500 miles, so I found an HD shop that had experience with making the CV51 work with cruise control and also had a good reputation for building motors, do a top end rebuild. Cylinders were scarred badly as though tolerences were too tight. After the re-build, ( another 1K$ ) the bike ran great, used no oil and ran 220 to 230 degrees. Had been running 260 to 270.
I'm sure that if I could have taken the bike back to Charlie, he would have made it right, but he offered no long distance help, and never came thru with the Cruise Control bracket.
Then to add insult to injury, I offered all my low mileage take off parts ( crankshaft, etc ) to a friend who is a very knowledgeable engine builder. Turns out that someone who was working for Charlie at the time ( not Hippo ) exchanged out my take off parts and gave me junk instead.
If you do a search on some other HD sites, you will find plenty of very happy customers, but you will find just as many who were screwed over and will never go back. So, like any other venture, do your homework. I thought I had, but the article in cycle world about SBC's budget build probably gave them more buisness than he could handle, and left many unhappy customers in it's wake.
