Question of the day
« on: February 06, 2008, 12:45:57 PM »

My son sent me this question he had in class today.

In a 4 stroke 6 cylinder engine, the fuel injectors open 10 degrees before BTDC. What position will Piston #1 be when the injector opens for #5 cylinder? Firing order is 153624 and the cylinders are 120 degrees apart.

A)   100 degrees BTDC
B)   80 degrees ATDC
C)   130 degrees BTDC
D)   110 degrees ATDC

Answer below:

His book states (B)

I think it’s (D), as does his class. My thought , injector opens at -10 degrees. -10 degrees + 120 degrees (amount of separation between #1 and #5) = 110 degrees or (D)

5    6

or

My assumption was that it was a in-line 6. I'll ask the question. Waiting on a reply....

i was thinking a 120 degree "V" configuration theoretically each cylyinder is following 60 degrees behind

360 degress in a revolution/ # of cylinders

Just heard back. Because he is at a CAT school it's assumed to be a in-line 6 diesel.

Wrongway, what am I missing? Is there a lag/lead between the 120 degrees of separation?

That's what I asked him this morning.

That being said, -10 + 60 degrees of separation would only be 50 degrees ATDC. I'm missing something....
