Which ECM do I buy
« on: February 10, 2008, 12:38:04 PM »

I have lost me sert attachment which means I have to buy another ecm..." definately not harley brand ".  I was wondering which was better the thundermax or the twin tec.  I have lots of work done to my bike.  Screamin eagle cnc ported heads, 10.5 to 1 pistons, hp inc 50 mm throttle body, woods cams tw8g gear driven and I want to go with the supertrapp 2 into1 mega exhaust.  there are just to many options.

Sorry I can't vote in your pole because I am a firm believer in the Stock ECM over all others.

I don't understand your statement "I have lost me sert attachment which means I have to buy another ecm...".  Does this mean you lost the SERT key?  And if so, why does that mean you have to buy another ECM?

Are you going to have it Dyno tuned or are you looking for something that will "learn" as you go, requiring installing O2 sensors in the exhaust pipes?

Springer,

I think what Jake is referring to is either the cable that hooks up the cartridge Interphase to the bike or the other cable that hooks up to the computer.

For the newer SERT HD only supplies the disc and all of the components that came with older SERTs are an option to be bought separately.

I think HD is forcing people to go back to the dealers for all o the tuning. And that is ironic as most of the dealers do not want to spend the money to send the Tech to HD SERT Technical Sessions, that is why there are a lot of independents who are experts with the HD SERT.

Jake,
I would lean toward getting what ever brand/unit my tuner recommended unless you will be doing the tuning yourself. More then likely what he recommends will be what he is most comfortable/proficient with.

What I mean is I lost the part you have to have to dyno the harley race tuner.  I guess I could get a power commander or another race turner but I want to replace the whole thing.  I dont want to be stuck having to go to harley to get it tuned.  I have not had good luck with the race tuner.  Nobody in this area really knows what theyare doing.  They one guy in reno that knows his stuff wont work on the race tuners.  He is a pwr cmdr guy but he did say he has installed a few thundermax and was happy with them.  Yes I am changing my pipes so I need to get it retuned.  I have the v&h pro pipe and I am going to change to the supertrapp supermeg.

The best advice that can be offered on tuning hardware is don't pick.  Not yourself.  Find the best tuner you can find that you're willing to travel to.  Ask him what he uses.  Buy that.  You're paying him to swing that hammer anyway.  No reason to not get the one he likes.

Jake;
You mentioned Reno, Nevada?

If so go see Brad at Freedom Cycles on S. Virginia st. He is proficient in both the Race tuner and PCIII.

If your looking for an auto tuning system the Daytona Twin Tec TCFI III is at the top of my list.

I know Brad and he is good but there is another guy over there named Chaz that has his own shop who I think is better. He doesn't do the race tuner though.  The last time I talked to Brad he didn't do the race tuner either.  That is why I went to reno Harley and I think they kept my tuner key but I am not sure. I dint think they set my maps right.  My buddy had brad work on his bike and they stripped out the oil drain plug and didn't tell him.  Now he has a leak so chaz is going to fix it for him.  Chaz does all his own work and doesn't have kids doing it for him.  His shop is always so clean you could eat off of it.  So why do you choose the twin tec over the thundermax.  Yes I do want to go auto tune.  I change elevation alot when I ride to redding or Chico.

Jake;
I have done both and prefer the TC mainly because of the support. Customer support is pretty much non-existant from Zippers if you are having any kind of issues with thier products,(a few here can attest to that). Chris from TC gave me his personal cell number so I could call him after hours when I was having tuning questions on the first unit I set up. The twin tec unit is also more advanced IMHO.
