Loose Belt
« on: February 11, 2008, 08:23:15 PM »

Ive been having trouble keeping my belt tight (on the bike not on me ) After setting it with the tensioning tool to 10lbs it slackens up after a short time. I marked on the axle cam to see if it moved but i cant tell that it did.  I did a thorough belt inspection and it looks fine. Any ideas out there??

If it doesn't hold an adjustment, it's shot. Should last maybe 50K with a regular engine. Throw a bigger HP engine and some holeshots and wheelies at it, 30K isn't too bad. Look at a Kevlar replacement. ;)

I thought only new belts wouldn't hold adjustment until they were broken in?  My belt on my EVO has 106K miles on it and it holds adjustment just fine.  No burnouts.  ;D har!   :drink:spyder

Van, I've got more miles than that and we know that I ride way harder than you do......so that shouldn't be it.

Just to be sure.......you are checking the bottom of the belt loop, right?  Half way between the two pulleys?  With the bike up right?

And with the belt at the same temp each time, and in several places along the length of the belt.  Similar to the way you can develop tight and loose spots on a chain, these belts and sprockets can have variations in tension as you rotate the parts.  As the mating parts wear, or due to runout in the sprockets, it isn't unusual to see some variation in tension.

I would agree with Jerry, try checking it several time rotating the wheel about 80* each time, see if you get the same measurement.
