valve seat machining history
« on: February 14, 2008, 08:07:50 AM »

valve seat machining has changed over the years. in the knuckle heads and iron sportster day seats were a part of the cast iron head shell, than when the pan heads came on seen they had brass seats. when the shovel heads were introduced they had a steel seat. life was good cheap gas, lead gas. these seat could be machine with stones and carbide cutters. in the 80 came unleaded gas stellite valves and seat to work with valves. things got a little harder in valve seat machining, along came form tool machines to cut valve seats. in performance applications we would have form tools designed to enhance air flow.  now life has got a liitle harder with powdered steel seats, these seats are harder than a whores heart, the more they are used the harder they get. to adress these hard seats formed tool machines now use carbide pilots and redsigned formed tools to get accurate valve seats. in 1999 the cnc world came to assist in maching valve seats. now it is possible to machine any angle, radius, compound angle or compound radius. these machine are used by the nascar teams in there cylinder head development program. i was at the PRI show in december, soon all machines with handles will be thing of the past, machines will all have a screen to do machine work, must be for the younger genaration
