I pulled the battery from my bike in the fall-2008 SERK w/ the factory Smart Security system. The owners manual does not mention anything special other than the reconnect the positive cable first on re-instalation. Any precautions to be aware of with the HD smart security system when putting the battery back in? Should the Maxi-fuse be out and the ignition on as it says to do when removing the battery to prevent the siren from going off?

When removing the battery:

1. have alarm fob near bike
2. bike On
3. pull maxi fuse
4. bike off
5. disconnect battery (negative side first)

To reinstall:

1. have alarm fob near bike
2. connect battery (positive side first)
3. install maxi fuse

Silence means they followed your instructions and no siren!

I went through this when I first got the 07, and had to install the battery tender pigtail.  Went to the gun cabinet and put on the ear protectors.

Had to go find your introductory post to see which bike you had.  Should be inside left sidecover clipped on to the fuse panel lid.  Looks like a maxi fuse; a big overgrown fuse.

With my last bike , 97 Fat boy, I'd pulled the battery every winter. I was going to do the same with my 09 SERG until I looked under the seat. Yikes the wires and stuff. Think I'm just gonna plug in the battery tender and put the seat back on.

OK Twolanerider..now I'm really giving away my mechanical skill level...where is the inside left sidecover, under the seat? or is it the decorative plastic cover in front of left saddlebag..and does it just "pull" off a clip??

No worries, no such thing as a poor question when you don't know the answer yet.

Yes, the "side cover" is that decorative panel in front of the saddlebag and below your rear end.  Saddlebag needs to come off first to remove either cover.  Under the left side cover is the cruise control's control module and, below that, the bike's main fuse panel.  On a plastic clip hanging off the fuse panel is the maxi fuse.  Big plug I guess inch and a quarter wide with two heavier gauge wires running to it.

Sometime when it's convenient you might consider pulling each side cover off and looking over the things there with the owner's manual in your hand.  There are fuses behind each that are worth knowing the whereabouts of to keep you from potentially sitting on the side of the road waiting for a two someday.  There are spare fuses already on board the bike.

There are three "fingers" that extend from the cover and go through rubber grommets in the bike frame.  One in each of the three corners of the mostly triangle shaped side cover.  Start at any one corner and pull it out.  Then do the others.

When reinstalling, especially if not used to the "feel" of pushing it back through, a grommet will occasionally push through and fall down in "there" somewhere.  Squirt a little WD-40 on your finger and wipe on the inside of the grommets before reinstallation. If nothing else the placebo effect will make the reinstall much easier .

I know that this in an old thread but oldies are goodies!

In preparing the bikes for winter, this is the first time in 20+ years of pulling the battery that I have had to consider the Smart Security system. As per my  habit I looked in the owners manual for the basics and it said to:

With fob present, turn the bike to the on position and then disconnect and remove the battery.  When doing it this way the dash and headlights flickered and sparked at the negative terminal.  I knew that this probably wasn't the best way and so I came to the forum for advice.  I see that the previous words of wisdom refer to pulling the Maxi Fuse first and then replace it last in the installation process.

The question that I have is that the info listed said to turn the ignition switch to the off position after removing the battery. Right now I have the bike covered and tucked away with the ignition switch in the "On" position an the Maxi Fuse in place. Will this cause any problems with the S.S. battery during the winter or does the Maxi Fuse need to be removed and the ignition in the "Off" position?
