Traveling with a Digital SLR
« on: February 19, 2008, 09:50:51 PM »

I recently purchased a Nikon D200 DSLR. I will be taking a few weeks off this summer and traveling up the east coast and I am looking for a good camera bag to go in either the Tour Pak or Saddle Bag. Are there any amateur or professional photographers that can recommend a good bag to protect my investment?

Thanks,
RideHard

What made you choose the D200? :nixweiss:

I have been looking at it, as well as the Nikon D300 and the Canon D5.

Because of the absolutely tremendously fantastic deal I got. Do you have a recommendation for a camera bag?

Depends on what you carry with your DLSR, lenses flash etc. I have Canon 400D and carry two other lenses along with the one mounted on the camera. I use a Lowepro Zoom 2 on the bike, which holds all but the flash and fits easily in bikes saddlebag. It is very well padded. Also use a Lowpro Slingshot AW200,a semi backpack, but have not used it on the bike as I worry that it may come loose, however unlikely.

I would think that any well padded camera bag would work fine in the tour pac or saddlebag as they are pretty much water and dust proof.  Vibration is your enemy (as well as heat) on the Harley for your camera gear.  Pad it well and pack it away from the exhaust/motor heat as much as possible would be my advice.  spyder

If you're looking for as much of a kit bag as you can carry in a King tour pak look at the Tamrac Pro 12.  It's a nice bag to carry several lenses, a couple of bodies, a good hand full of small accessories including digital accessories.  The bag will fit in a King pak with a bit of space around it to spare.  Room for filters or whatever.  Pretty sure mine has packed film and digital bodies, a half dozen lenses, batteries, cleaning stuff, TTL flash and about anything else I might need for a weekend playing with the cameras.  Relatively well organized bag that works well for the tour pak.

For the bike trips I bought a Lowepro slingshot to place in the tour pak and still have some room for a few other things. I also will put a piece of soft foam below it and wrap it in plastic - just for some extra protection. I have Lowepro backpack for when I want to haul all my gear (multiple lenses, separate flash, etc). I just recently upgraded from a D80 to the D300 and what I have found is that I can get by using the Nikon 18-200 VR Lens as the best general use lens. It allows me to just carry the body, charger, some filters, flash unit, and it all fits nicely in the slingshot. If you want to carry additional lenses then one of the backpack models would work better but it will take up the whole tour pak. I would not put the bag in the saddle bags as there is a lot more heat from the pipes/engine there and probably more vibration.

Good luck on your trip - take a large enough memory card or hopefully you can unload your shots as you go to another medium.

Boy, you guys packing all this extra camera gear need a trailer......no way you're gonna be able to carry everything else you need in just the saddlebags........and where are your weapons/tools/leathers/raingear/bike cover/lightweight jacket/gloves/not to mention changes of jeans/shirts/socks/toiletries/etc., etc. going to reside?  :confused5: har!  :drink: spyder

I carry a Rebel XTI, EX430 Speed Light, Tamaron 300 Zoom Lense + The factory Lense, The cords to hook it up to the PC for download and 2 filter for each lens.  This is the bag I carry it all in:

http://www.caselogic.com/camcorder_case_with_removable_pouch/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=57088

It fits all of the above and still slides tightly into the side bag of my FLHTCUSE3 with the liner in place.  I still have room for my FXRG pants and whatever peices of my switchback jacket that I remove.  That leaves the tour pack and other side bag free to carry spare oil for when it starts leaking.   :P

Good luck with finding a bag and Ride Safe,
J-Carr

I carry ours in a Pelican water proof box. It is designed for marine use. Has an o-ring in the lid for waterproofing. Filled with foam that is pre cut into blocks that make it easy to fit your cameras and lenses into.

They can be bought at Bass Pro Shops or Gander Mountain...

Military Amma Cans hurt too......you just learn not to drop 'em on your toes.  They're great for waterproof storage, but heavier than the Pelicans.  spyder
