HID - Xenon bulb color choice did you use?
« on: February 20, 2008, 10:02:03 AM »

Getting ready to order HID - Xenon light kit (Dual H9) from HD-Dude (thank's to Boatman's recomendation) and have read previous post and wondering;

1) What color choice have you bought and why?

2) What bulb did you put in your spot's to try and match if any?

3) any other input would be appreciated.

I also have the 4300K (crystal white) and the stock driving light bulbs.

Go to www.xtralights.com  to see the difference in colors and the install instructions.

You can also get a xenon or bi-xenon setup.  Most have gotten the bi xenon so the high beam is also xenon.  The driving lights look yellow compared to the bi xenon but most of us haven't changed them out.  2Lane had a driving light bulb upgrade to install but it was stolen before the install so we don't know how they worked.

Chuck got farther along than I did with teh spotlight HID upgrade.  His didn't get stolen out of his garage and actually made it as far as his bike.  The report was that the longer HID bulbs made contact with the glass lense when installed in the housing.  So his spots still look like crap compared to his headlight also; just like the rest of us :huepfenlol2: .

I have the bi-xenon setup but gotta say that lighting is much, much better with low beam and spots (even with stock bulbs) that with high beam and no spots.  Guess I need to get busy and do the mod that allows spots on even with the high beam.

4,300K.  I tried the 8000K blue bulb but the 4300K has much better visibility.  As for the spots, mine match pretty well.  I bought some 8000K halogen bulbs off of eBay and several others who have the HID have made positive comments about them.

With the addition of the HID lights what I found was that when I get the lo-beam to where it gave a really nice painting of the road surface out in front for the perfect illumination, the hi-beam is useless it shoots so high. I could use it for a coon light at 300 yards. This is best seen driving in a canopy of trees. You can spot critters up in the trees with that hi-beam.

Unfortunately there isn't a way to aim them separately so if you want your hi-beam to punch a hole way on down the road like it should be, then the lo-beam has to be brought down pretty low, lower than I want. It's a trade-off.

Just finished wewiring spots to stay on with high beam. Thanks again Boatman for info.

No problem.  I have learned a great deal from this site.  Every time I thought I wouldn't have to take the faring off again, somebody found something new to install.  Just trying to save you a few steps.

Regarding the fairing, it is difficult to reinstall the 2 screws between the lower fork without dropping or starting them crooked (which is easy to do).  Either buy a piece of 1/4" coarse allthread, cut to length, install all thread into lower fairing, and then use nuts on the allthread-much easier to start the nuts.  I have to give 2Lane and Hd-dude credit for this tip.  You just have to be careful lowering the fairing that the allthread dosen't catch on some wires.

Better yet than the all thread is to go to a hardware store and purchase the longest female allen setscrews you can buy (normally around 1" which isn't long enough) so you have to buy a 1/2 or so allen, thread it in the fairing and bottom, then screw the longer 1" approx allen in on top of it.

If I knew what I know now think I'd just buy HID for the low beam.  But what the heck, I've got a built in spare 'just in case' I have a problem with low beam and need to swap out.
