FIRST SERVICE 500 MILES????
« on: February 21, 2008, 08:28:34 AM »

I was just browsing through the Owners Manual and happened to notice that on the periodical service periods, the first one is supposed to take place with only 500 miles!! This cant be right; on my Dyna it was 1000 miles... I have an FXSTSSE2 2008. Can someone tell me what to go by when the dealer mentioned 1000 miles for the first service?

I haven't heard of the 500 mile sevice even though your book states that.  Must be a misprint as 1,000 miles for the 1st service is standard.

Could be that 1,000 miles is for US-Europe and 500 miles is for the rest of the world?

You know how sometimes you are sure you've read something but you can't find it?  I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the Springer's still have a 500 mile first service rather than 1000 miles like the other models, and the reason has to do with the springer front suspension.  Springer folks, need you to chime in here.

And how have your rear head gaskets held up over the years?   :orange: :huepfenjump3: :mango: :bananarock: :apple: :carrot: :jalapeno: :cucumber: :pineapple: :pepper: :2vrolijk_21:

500 mile service is to check the springs. Manual says 500 mile service to change all oil too and the next service at 2500 miles. When I took my CVO Springer in for the 500 mile service I asked them to change the oil...they didn't and I didn't feel like leaving it there any longer either. I waited and took it in for the 1000 mile service, same as the other bikes, changed oils, serviced springs again. I figure that you can never change the oil too often.

No need  to change oil on the 07/08. As designed, this bike has built in oil loss features that permit the frequent replenishment of the engines oil supply thus ensuring that a continued quantity of high quality lubricant is maintained. ;D  ;D

On first read, you had me believing you.

And No, I don't want to buy any swamp land.

Had to read this twice.  Thanks for the chuckle.

I had to replace them after 53 years...The new ones should last a while.   ;)

I was told, 500 mile break in period, 1,000 mile 1st service.  I don't know if the manual I have is different.  After all, it's in English, not Spanish.  Every other manual I have is in Spanish though.

I have a '08 Springer and the dealer told me to wait till 1000 miles even though the book says 500.When he said that a couple other service guys chimed in and said yeah, that's what it is now.Gave me the impression they got the info from  HD. Makes since to me.500 miles is way to low for a bike to need service. Then every 2500 miles, which is more than any other model. However, the maintenance schedule does not mention anything needing to be done at 2500 miles. ???

The frequency is only for the springer...They can get a little loose, no big deal, you'll get familiar with how it feels over bumps and such and be able to tell when it needs a little attention.

Hell yea! I ride an '08 Springer and have been a 'good boy' following the guidelines. My 500 mile 'service' cost near 500$. I guess I feel better trying to keep my shi* under warranty. The Springer front end is what is important to have checked; after that I believe we should start using superior lubes (Amsoil) in our *hit!
