Stupid observation / question, but worth asking......
« on: February 25, 2008, 10:31:27 PM »

With all you SERK guys going the route with hard bags and paying lots of money to get them to match and then some of you going the batwing route too, I don't get it...

Why didn't you just buy a SEUC and strip it down the your desired strippyness????  Not sure if that is a word...  :o :o :o

Just thought I'd ask.

As the say the only stupid question is the one you don't ask, but in my case this may be a stupid question.

This is as good an explanation as anyone is going to come up with on this topic. Speaking as someone who went the route described in the original post on the thread, realized I'd lost what I had, backed up and then moved forward again toward bettering vice changing what I had, I can only say
" don't it always seem that you don't know what you got till it's gone "

I think it will be nice to have multiple looks with one bike.  I can take the fairing off and put the leather bags on for that stock SERK look or leave the fairing off and have the hard bags.  I can add the fairing with either of the sets of bags too.  It's like having a convertable or multiple bikes in the garage that only take up the space required by one.

Now that being said, I'll have to wait to see how often I change those things.  With the SEUC there is no option to take off the fairing that I'm aware of.

I can't wait for the first sighting of a fairing on Howie's bike! :huepfenjump3:

All posts have strong points. Regardless, what bike you purchase there are going to be changes. What you are willing to spend on those changes depends on your wallet and creature comforts. The modet T was the only item that had one option. Black!

I would say that this is not an issue specific to the SERK owners.  Everyone on here loves their bikes and loves adding to them.  I think most people would rather buy a bike and add to it, than buy one and strip it down.  JMO

For me, I am going to add hard bags because I think they look better and are more functional than the leather bags.  And what it will cost me is nothing compared to the price difference between the SERK and SEUC.  Why pay for stuff that I don't want/need.  Besides this way you get to add the items you want and have them look the way you want them to look, not the way HD wants them to look.  Of all of the bags and fairings we have seen here, very few of the paint jobs look exactly the same.  I guess thats why we call them "Custom" bikes.

I s'pose I should have been a bit more lucid in my earlier reply.

I went the RoadKing Ultra-Classic route with the bike that became Elvis (which MJZ now owns)  When I got it all done with the Dragonfly fairing,King Tour-pak and a ton of long miler stuff, my best brother Beagle looked at it and said " you know bro you messed up a sweet SERK." He went on to talk about how A Road King is not an Electra-Glide nor is it a Road Glide. It is designed with the idea of harking back to the days before bat-wing fairings and tour-paks and while I hated to admit it, Brother Beagle was looking out for me when he said that. So I stripped off all the bagger parts and many of you benifited from that particular garage sale as I sold stuff for less than 50 cents on the dollar. And then I bought the Alligator Bob Croc Bags and seat and in my minds eye, there has never been a prettier SERK.

AND YET, when MJZ bought ole Elvis he didn't want the bags and seat and he instead put a cool Corbin solo with the rail around the back which made the bike look even more like an FLH that Elvis himself would have loved. So the moral of the story is, hard bags, soft bags - - cool, but tour-pak and fairing - - - - - - - NOT COOL. You want a fairing buy a Road Glide, you want a non see through wind screen buy an Electra-Glide. But leave the RK as it was intended - - - a time machine to an earlier day in motorcycling.
