LRebel's Leaker
« on: March 05, 2008, 06:31:23 PM »

Ok, I guess I am a new member to the "Oil Leaker" club. :sauer005:

Nice weather last Saturday, so myself & several friends took a ride to eat BBQ.  After the big feed, we were all standing around out side and I noticed oil at the base of my rear cylinder.  Looking closer, I noticed that it is starting to leak a little around the front cylinder also.  This is crap!.....the bike doesn't even have 3K miles yet.

Ok, I have questions:

* I bought my bike at a dealer about 100 miles away.  Any problems taking it to a local dealer?

* I assume I should take the trailer hitch off before I take it to the dealer?

* What do you think about having a cam upgrade done while the dealer has it?

* I have had absolutely no problems with the bikes I have owned in the past, so I really don't know very much about the service departments of the two local dealers. Any advice?

* Am I missing anything

Ask the local dealers if they have had to do any warranty repairs on the CVO bikes due to engine oil leaks. Ask for references and talk to them about building a relationship for working on your bike.

make sure they check for cylinder liner movement.  Did you do a stage one on this?

* Under the terms of the H-D warranty, you can take your bike to any dealer for warranty service.

* I would definitely remove the trailer hitch.  Don't give some yahoo an excuse to blow you off.

* If you're thinking about a cam upgrade anyway, might be an ideal time to do it for a couple reasons.  First, the labor charge should be less, since they have to pull the heads and the pushrods to do the head gasket repair anyway.  Second, if the service department is getting some $$$ from you they may be less likely to try to blow you off on the warranty stuff.

I would take the trailer hitch off the bike.
I would question the dealer about the cam upgrade and see what they say about them warrantying it.  Actually query both fo them.  Based on if you buy from them and they install would there be any warranty issues iwth just a stage 1 air cleaner, pipes, sert and a cam?   If they say no problem get it written on your invoice from service and have the SM sign it.  Never know how long he will be there and its worth its weight later down the road

First time around, you are kind of screwed a bit because the dealers depending on build date and harley tech to tell them how to proceed.  They will probably not want to replace your cylinders unless of course liners moved or other issues like porocity exist in the cylinders.   I would demand they check the liner in the cylinders for movement.   If they do, I would have new rings front and rear put in and a fresh ball hone for cross hatches.   Yes I know you only have 3k miles on it, but a job worth doing is worth doing right imo.  Now if the cylinders have no movement it is going to be a tough call.    The other thing I would demand they check is your crank runout.   I was just told they changed the spec again from .012 to .015 at the end of the crank and at the flywheels from .003 to .005.

Sorry you are going through this we shouldnt have to with the cost of these bikes.   Let us know how you fair with all this.

LR,
If you bought it from ProTeam, you shouldn't have any problems with the hitch.  I don't go for service at either of the "locals".  I only even buy parts from one of them, the other is even to crappy to bother going into.  Marvin knows his chit at ProTeam and so do the techs working there.  You'll be treated fairly there.  When mine has needed the gaskets done (2 sets so far), that's where it goes.   There's a pretty good mexican joint across the interstate.  Makes for a good ride!

I appreciate everyone's advice & input!

Arctic,

Two sets of gaskets........Wow, that stinks.  Did you have both sets done at ProTeam?  How long did they have your bike?

Yep, I think you're right...I think Marvin really knows his stuff.  I was just thinking it would be much easier to take it to Harley World or Ft. Thunder.  I think, based on your advise, I will take it back to ProTeam.  Probably wait until next week when it is warmer to take it in.

Thanks,
LRebel

I noticed a very small amount of oil on top of the chrome rear cylinder base cover. Only trouble is I have the Doherty Powerpacc air filter with power vents and it tends to puke a little so I don't know if the oil is from there or from a gasket leak  :nervous:

Any ideas on how I can tell the difference?

You should notice seepage at the rear by the exaust port. You are right with the Doherty. I had one on my RK & it did puke.

It very much matters, HD won't warranty any power train repairs if the bike has a trailer hitch!
The individual dealers may choose not to "tell" the waranty folks about the hitch, others might & if they send out a rep, you're hooped.

Yes, I'm going to take the hitch off just to be safe.

I've not heard anything good about "Ft Thunder", but maybe the new owners can turn it around.  HD World is good people, but I've not had any luck in service.  I think each time I've had gaskets done, they've had it done in a couple of days, but my schedule rarely allows me to pick it up in less than a week or so.  They've gone to bat for me a couple of times, so I can't complain.  'course, maybe since the 06 and the 07 come out of there may have helped!  With the new building down there, there's also lots of room, so I worry less about the bikes getting damaged.

Are you kidding me?

Not kidding you, was very surprised by this and the Service Advisor had just gotten off the phone with tech services he had nothing to gain by telling me what the spec that he was given was.

He said if I had been near .012 they would have fought for it, but since I am near .004 and .001 at the crank they wouldnt even consider an arguement about it.  Do I have anything proving this no, just going off directly related information from the Tech to service advisor to me and sharing it to make others aware.

3, 12, 15, what's next?  This is a like a reality show.  I thought watching OCC built bikes with a hammer was bad, but HD stands for Hide and Defend.
