Absolutely no way would I accept a repaired paint matched tank.  It was flawless in new condition when you gave them your bike and you should accept nothing less be returned to you.  A new tank is the only option you should accept.

Many years ago, I had a tank dropped and damaged by a dealer - who repaired and repainted it without telling me.  When I picked up the bike, I thought they had put someone else's tank on my bike because the paint did not match.  When they fessed up, I went ballastic.  They decided the path of least resistance was to replace the tank with a new one...

I agree, they should replace the tank with a new one.  That is the same method H-D uses when they have a warranty issue with the CVO fuel tanks.  They don't even try to have a dealer or his subcontractor paint the old one.  Of course, a really good painter could repair it for considerably less than the price of a new one, but that should be your choice, not the dealer's.

continuing with the hi-jacked thread...I would not care about saving money especially since it is the dealers you would be saving...a new tank is the only solution to accept

Just joined the head gasket elite. Was down in Arizona riding for 10 days and rear head gasket started to leak I have 10,000 miles on my ride and I thought I was going to be one of the lucky ones I guess Not.
Took bike to shop yesterday and called HD support and got signed in and got a referance # felt pretty good things were happening pretty quickly and then today came dealer just called me said they had to order head gasket they wont do front cylinder so I asked about the liner ?  Then got what about the liner? Now I"am getting a little frustrated and told them they need to check the bike out and order all parts that are needed at one time.
So I guess I need to ask what should I do from here I dont want the bike half fixed any input would be greatly appreciated.

               Thanks Chuck

Get your dealer on the phone with the tech center.  They obviously are not familiar with the problem or the current (latest) solution being offered by the MOCO.  And Welcome to the Club!  You're in great company of a fine (but frustrated and disappointed) crowd!

No matter what you do, you're ####### unless your dealer will proactively order the parts in advance.  They won't order the liner til it's apart and then you have to wait again. Ask HD to check the runout of the crank while its apart.  Offer to pay the slight difference in labor once the heads are off.  This is what I did and got a new motor which BTW comes in less time than the liners and gaskets do.  Just my advice.

My Parts Manual shows 0.005" and 0.010" over only. So that appears correct. But why didn't they just replace the barrels Jeff? :nixweiss:

they did and it took that much to clean new ones up and motor man says thats usual for them to be off. The motor man says he can hone to .005 if they are straight , and if not straight  he bores thats .010 so if they come apart again probally another set of new cly's   ride safe jdo

Smiley...being as the head gasket is a new design, there is no way I would have one cylinder with one type of gasket and the other cylinder with the other kind...tell you dealer to get his head out of his butt...call the tech line and demand that they both be changed with the same gasket material
