My hat off to all the ladies who learned how to ride and those that still ride the sportster line of HD bikes.  I have never ridden one.  I could not get over the feel on the sales floor.  I opted for a non HD bike to learn on - I bought a Suzuki 800 Intruder.  I aspired to get a low rider one day, but we started to do a lot of travel on the bikes, and I learned quickly that I wanted a bike with more width to load stuff wider, instead of going higher.  I did not have the cash to get a heritage when I traded my 800 on a 1500 Intruder.  From that it was a easier move to the Road King and now I am on the Electra Glide.  I would like to try to ride a sporty some day, because now that I have the basics of riding down, I'd like to figure out what it was that threw me off so much when I was first starting out.

It was the height and top heavy feeling I am sure. I am not tall but I am taller than you and I hated the feeling when I stood the bike up it seemed to have all the weight in the top side. The Fat Boy and Low rider are balanced just right. I truly think Dave should let me have the pumpkin and I think I would do great on that. The V-Rod is a nice balanced ride also.  So Dave how about a Two for One trade Fat Boy and V-Rod for the Pumpkin ?

Not to negotiate for Dave but I would call it a deal if he can get a SERG thrown into the mix!
Hows that Dave?

He can ride the blue SERG anytime he wants.
But I know he would rather ride his.
No room at the inn for a new one?
Sound like a recipe for getting rid of the Fatboy. (the bike, not Dave)
We are so full at the S/B residence that I have to keep one at the Harley shop.

I can't think about selling the Fat Boy (the bike not Dave) and Dave's has his Dads Bike now and it is is project bike for right now I just thought I might ride the Pumpkin and see how I do and I am sure Dave will wish I had gone to work today! But I am sure he is glad you were available to help him out.

She took the MSF course on her own in 2001 and passed. Now this is a woman that cannot drive a manual shift car. Way to go. She started on a Buel Blast that was not her favorite. It being a one lunger it was hard to start moving. So she moved up to a 2003 anv. Black Low Rider. The the Softail Deluxe came out in 05 and she feel in love and she owned it until she figured out she needed Cruise Control. Thus came the 07 FLHRSE04 nice cruise control option. She rides appprox 18,000 miles a year. She really enjoys the riding and doesn't miss her BSR time. She also rides alot with a Womens riding group that rides every Thurday night.

Couldn't help getting into this discussion. I was 62 when I first swung a leg over a bike on the FRONT seat. It was my husbands 07 883.  OOOOPS. Went real fast for about 15 feet! Got up, said "----- it!" and went home to enroll in the motorcycle safety course. Took it, loved it. Rode a Honda VLX for 11 months and 7000 miles. Got online, found a FXR4 in northern Iowa ( a gazillion miles away) and bought it. Got it, love it, would recommend it to any woman for a powerful, fast, nimble ride which is low enough and incredibly well-balanced. The FXR of any year is a great woman's bike. I am now 64, and ride everyday. The FXR has given me the confidence to take myself just about anywhere I want to go, and is light and nimble enough to be a dream to handle.  Try one, you will like em.
I am 5'5", weigh 140#.....and OLD.  Husband has a sporty, and a Softtail Heritage. I can ride either one, and the softtail is like riding a couch down the road, but is heavier and not as nimble. I love my FXR.

Abby,
Great post!  I'm glad you stuck with it!  My wife is freaking out but wants to take the next step.  I can't wait for her to read this thread for inspiration.  She's 44 and very capable of handling any of these bikes (she just doesn't know it yet).  We're going today to look at other bikes.  Keep posting everyone!.

Check out the Sedona ride in May, lots of folks and we usually have a group from Texas.
