It's great that aside from some puking that the bike is doing so well.  Getting all the accessory suff lined out is just an added bonus to have fun with.  Love seeing it all working so well.  Can't wait to see it next week :2vrolijk_21: .

Howie I copied this from V-Twin forum from a very repected member HDMD88:Concerning S&S Breather

When I see them I pull them out and in the garbage they go.
First off the breather only lets the engine breath one direction, this was fine from Flat Head days to EVO days but the Twin Cam motor is an internal breathing motor. This means the TC breaths from the crank case to the cam chest and then up to the rocker boxes when the piston is on the down stroke, (very little air escapes the engine through the two small holes in the head breather bolts) as the piston goes up the bore the air is pulled out of the top end into the cam chest and through the pinion bearing into the crank case again. During the up stroke of the piston and air traveling into the crank case there is a pull on the oil in the top end that assist in the return of that said oil into the cam chest for removal. If you install the S&S breather it only allows the air to pass through the bearing from the crank case to the cam chest one way....now as the piston goes up the bore the breather stops the air from cycling back through assisting in oil drain from the top and causing a vacuum in the crank case which you DON'T need with this Twin Cam breathing design. Now the oil has to return by gravity alone which slows the return process so oil can be actually filling the rocker boxes. All the oil is directed into the cam chest now in the TC not the Crank case. EVO's and earlier Harley's the oil from the top end was directed into the crank case and their breathers where designed to make that vacuum in the crank case to assist in oil return from the top end. (there are other reasons for crank case vacuum too but thats another topic)
Bottom line in my opinion the S&S breather is just another way to get you to shoot the lock off your wallet....it's not needed and it's a waist of time and money. It doesn't help in scavenging oil out of the cam chest back to the oil tank and that is the ONLY way to prevent oil carry over....get the oil back to the tank.

Brad

Not the first time I've heard this Brad, thanks for posting it though. I copied it and sent it to Vern. I'll see how bad it is on the York trip. I might find myself doing exactly as HDMD88, ripping it out when I get back. I'll see what happens and what Vern thinks! :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks Don, me too! Puking gets taken care of with a rag at gas stops. As long as me or Binx ain't wearing it, it's just annoying. But I do want to address it. And Brad's post sure seems to do that! ;)

Hey Howie, you've got that scooter ready now!  Looks great and I know you're  tickled that she's running good.  I'm having a bit of a puking problem also when I run it hard.....partly because it just bothers me to run my oil half full.  If I do that, it seems to do much less puking.  Just  helps to clean the filter ( and not re-oil it heavy at all!) more often.....that helps keep some of the excess oil off your jeans.  :o har!  :drink: spyder

Thanks spyd! I and Vern both agree. He wants to run full oil also. So...

TODAY'S UPDATE:

The bike ran flawlessly on the York Trip. Put just about 1K on her on this trip. Half the trip allowed me only to 3K RPM. The second half allowed me to 3.5K RPM. Now I'm ready to take her to the next 500 RPM level, 4K RPM. But that won't happen before another oil change. Vern wants that stuff outta there before putting any more miles on her. So she goes back this week for that and....

Vern's modification of my HPI Backplate to install some banjo bittings for the breather. He wants to bring them upward toward the gas tank to allow it to drain back into the engine. If this solves the puking completely, no further mods would be required. If it still drips out, even being above the engine, we'll trap it with a hose before running that hose to under the bike to allow whatever oil to return before just dumping the rest to the ground. :2vrolijk_21:

She is not using a drop of oil otherwise. She's running really great, except for being rich from the old map. This motor's so much more efficient than the previous one, with the same top end, but an S&S/Timken bottom end now! Plus, the top end is installed properly now too. Gotta tell ya, this thing pulls like a mutha considering I've never exceeded 3.5K RPM, and never above 1/2 throttle. So I'm not even fully on the cam yet! It beats as GH's stocker with the SERT/RH's/SEAC when I was at half throttle and shifting at 3.5K, while he was WFO leaving a light. Unless he was sandbagging that is! ::)

So all in all, she's on her way. It was a pleasure completing an entire 1K mile trip sans problems or a breakdown, as has been Cybil's past with that stock POS 110 in her. She's happy I gave her some reliability and some muscle now. And her payback is the way she's been running. She seems to enjoy her new heart transplant. Oil temp in the worst horrific NYC traffic leaving here on Thurs was 217, the hottest she ever got. Normal temp after 2 hours of riding in 80 deg weather is no higher than 200. ???

So ya'll probably never thought you'd hear this from me after the hassle I had getting my parts, but Wes' Cycle-Rama package is performing beautifully and as predicted. I love the power, the torque, the sound, and the performance. And Vern's new bottom end and assembly of Wes' top end, seems to have taken Wes' components to an even happier place. :o

So the next steps are to stop the puking or stop it from being annoying, and getting her tuned. And there's no reason not to believe that this is the end of mine and Cybil's HD 110 woes now. Time will tell, as I'm still a little gun shy. But my gut tells me I've done the right thing here and can finally enjoy my life with my new best friend!!! ;)

Scott

About 30-33 the best I figured. On Sunday, I took an extra gallon at each fuel stop with GH. I took 4 gals each time and he took 3. So 25% more fuel than stock. I expect to improve it a little, but not much, with a good tune. But the way it runs, who cares? You gotta pay if ya wanna play! ;)

I need a solid 160 miles out of a tank while towing my Bushtec to keep my trip to the cabin up north at one gas stop.  Halfway is about 155 miles and it is just over 300 there....  My first couple of tanks have been about 30, but I am running rich as chit right now...

I hear ya Scott. It rained, snowed, hailed, sleeted and the sun popped out all in the same half hour. If you don't like Illinois weather wait ten minutes...it'll change. Strange spring so far!
