Everything breaks eventually. Your perception that mine can't be kept from breaking in reasonable periods of time is where your confusion lies. It's gotta be built right and with the right parts, to have a chance of getting a good life out of it before having to rebuild again.  Then on top of that, chit happens! But you already know all this. Like it's your first rodeo. Harleys break and we fix em cause we love em. So what else is new! ::) :P ;D

Hoist! 8)

No confusion here Howie. I KNOW that you'll break it sooner than later. You'd sooner die than not hammer your bike to the max.

I never said that as a criticism. Some people took it upon themselves to see my comments as being negative, but that was not the intent.

Guys who ride like you pay the price. It's what makes them happy so it's a price they're willing to pay. I have no problem with that. I was one of those guys for many many years. And yes, the only way to deal with it is to own more than one motorcycle.

It's all good to me but people should be aware when you modify a Harley-Davidson for maximum performance there is a price you pay.

We have site members with little knowledge of Harley-Davidsons and less still of mechanical things. They read what we write on the site and decide they want it too and then when it breaks 5,000 miles down the road, they're all pissed off and perhaps even stranded. I feel those of us on the site who've been doing this for 20, 30 , 40 years or more owe it to these new guys to make sure they understand what it is they're buying into when they sink $10k in engine mods into their bikes.

I absolutely agree with that B B. Very good point. But on the other hand, you build an engine like mine or Pete's or some others here, and then ride it like a pussy, it'll probably last forever! ;)

Ahh, that conversation.

Understand completely Brian.  Many don't understand that playing (mechanically or riding "strenously") often begets more maintenance.  Bringing together disparate components from various mftr's to accomplish what we want to accomplish makes it incumbent on us (not the mftrs) to be able to bring it all together and make it work.  We're creating a new template when we do that that the third party vendors really aren't responsible for.  If you don't have the time or the skill to be able to make the stuff work sometimes then you have to leave it alone.  That's just part of the task if you do your own thing with the bikes.

Same with riding.  I don't ride nearly as aggressively as I used to.  Though at times my right hand feels younger than it really is.  Part of doing that is more repair or maintenance though.  Just part of the process.  You need to know that and understand it going in.  These machines aren't immutable to our abuse.  We can and do bust them quite regularly.  The important distinction is knowing when we busted them or when they busted on their own and shouldn't have.

The really good road is building it strong.  Strong enough for a bit more than you really intend regularly.  Then ride it as you wish.  That combination should get you something that will be reliable for a long time.  Unless you drop a damned valve keeper....   :nixweiss:

Face it.  No matter what we do there is always the possibility that anything can break at any time.  No one's fault.  Chit just happens sometimes.  Fortunately not often.  But damn if it can't happen.

Why would it be DEAD????

I want to know what was said about the keeper???? I had heard through the grapevine (actually the grapes mouth) about a year and a half ago that there was a problem with a certain mfg's keepers. It was found after a certain company had used quite a few of them and they started to fail.

Inquiring minds need to know!!!!!

Mike, since someone has an expensive repair ahead of them here it might not be the best time to be subtle.  If there is any recovery even potentially possible for a manufacturing error knowing those in the error's chain can only be beneficial.

Just as an example we've had a member here claim to know precisely the problems I would run in to with the 103 package from Zippers, that he had experienced them himself and had done so before I did.  But he'd not said anything to forewarn because he was concerned about alienating the company during his own attempt at recovery.  While, perhaps, understandable that cost me a lot of time and money that might have been avoidable.  So if there's information more then base rumor that might help Pete out how about sharing?

I know that guy!
Just a poser that reads info then passes it as his.
Just another wannabe that is jealous of what others have and how it runs.
Even had a picture taken on my bike so he could finally sit on a fast machine.
Don, your right! Never even thought about how much money he cost you.
But I'm sure he has some kind of excuse, they all do!

Chip, I'm not worried about the who or the why.  Could care less after the fact.  But Pete might have some options before him if there's a manufacturing error out there.  No different than seeing a bike on the side of the road.  May not always be able to help out.  But help out if we can.

I will call you tonight. You BOTH ( T/L and S/B ) know of my problem. I don't want to go into it here on a public forum till I get things straight.

Pete can PM me or call me and I will fill him in on what I remember what I was told about the keepers.

Any details need not be public if there's not gain other than notoriety for its own sake.  Just the guy potentially needing a hand getting it is the important thing.
